Newman News Term 1 Week 10: From the Deputy Principal Wellbeing Secondary

As a Catholic and Marist community, we are challenged to live out the Gospel values of Jesus Christ in our everyday actions and words. Over the Term, students on the Marcellin Campus have pledged their commitment to service by their involvement with Caritas, supporting the College Twilight Tours for prospective families and by participating in extra-curricular commitments. Respectful relationships and positive partnerships between students and teachers have been demonstrated across all aspects of College life and in times of difficulty, we have come together in solidarity and compassion for one another.

Congratulations to all students for a great Term and wonderful start to the year; especially our Year 7 students who have settled beautifully into high school.

Newman News Term 1 Week 10: From the Head of Primary

We journey together to be better followers of Jesus.

The students have enjoyed another amazing Term and should be proud of their efforts. The way they have each come together in their classes and worked with their new teacher this year has seen them progress in their learning, their confidence and their understanding of what it means to come to a faith filled school. The season of Lent calls us to examine our lives and to see how we can follow the Gospel to rise again with Christ. Our faith drives all that we do here at Newman College and one of the greatest benefits is the sense of belonging, the sense of community, the sense of connection. These elements provide the perfect building blocks for learning.

Sustainability

Commencing in Term 2, we would like to support our families to reduce the amount of packaging and plastic in children’s morning tea and lunches. We would like to encourage recyclable containers, paper and wax wraps to replace single use plastics and packaging. Teachers will share information about waste and environmental impacts in each class in an age appropriate way.

We will be supporting our students to sort their rubbish at lunch and recess into the big recycle bins supplied by the Town of Cambridge and continue to feed our hungry worms with the compostable waste.

Each year level will begin their gardening projects next Term. Family assistance is appreciated and welcomed and gardening advice from any Newman green thumbs would be well received. Watch out for further notes and information.

Our Sustainability Committee would like to propose a new initiative called Newman Exchange where we share, reuse and recycle things in our school community. This could start with our own “Little Library” where you can bring a book and take a book or share extra produce from your garden such as lemons. Let us know your ideas.

Project Compassion

Thank you to everyone who gave so generously to Project Compassion this year. Your kind denotations will be received by those who are less fortunate and are greatly appreciated.

Walk for Water

To help our Years 3-6 students understand just how far some people need to walk for water each day, they participated in the walk for water event. This relay highlighted how fortunate we are and helped drive our Project Compassion fundraising efforts.

Solar Car Challenge

On Tuesday 9 April, a team of four students participated in the 2019 Synergy Solar Car Challenge Grand Final held at Optus Stadium. The team were faced with the challenge of assembling a solar car from a small solar panel and car parts. They had one hour to design and make their cars and they then put their cars to the test, racing them over a 20-metre track to see who was the fastest. Congratulations to the team, Swarom Kanvinde, Emily MacLaurin, Olivia Ralls and Stefano Rapanaro who showed great collaboration skills and persistence throughout the competition.

The emphasis of the day was about giving everyone involved the opportunity to display skills learnt, promoting fair play, encouraging everyone to participate and of course to have fun! It was a busy day for all. Students played their way through seven games with lots of enthusiasm and great sportsmanship. Well done to everyone involved.
