Newman News Term 1 Week 10: From the Deputy Principal Mission and Catholic Identity

‘In these weeks of Lent, God has told us about his love and awoken in us a trust in him. Now, in this last set of readings as we enter Palm Sunday and Holy Week, God is showing us how to trust even when the presence of God seems far away, our strength diminished and our trust stretched. The readings of Holy Week could almost have a single heading: This is Your Life. As you walk through them, I encourage you to see where your life and the life of Jesus intersect, as indeed they do’ – Sr Hilda Scott OBS, Jambroo Benedictine Abbey.

Years 7-12 Holy Week Liturgy

On Wednesday 10 April, the Marcellin Campus gathered as a community to recognise Holy Week and Easter by celebrating a Liturgy led by a group of Year 12 leaders. Students gathered were invited to reflect on the enduring challenge of the Easter story in our Christian tradition, and to place themselves in the continuing tradition which invites each of us to live the promise of Jesus’ resurrection in proclaiming the Gospel in our world.

PK-Year 2 Easter Liturgy

Our Marian Campus was led by the Year 2 students in the Easter Liturgy that portrayed the Passion of Christ. The students were able to see the true meaning of Easter and all joined in the story.

Reconciliation

The season of Lent has allowed our students in Years 4 – 6 to take part in the rite of Reconciliation. This Sacrament repairs our relationship with God, with each child being able to receive absolution before Easter. Thank you to Fr Chinh and Fr Kaz for celebrating this for us.

Plenary Council 2020

The staff and students of Newman College have been contributors to the listening and dialogue process of the Plenary 2020. Please see below an update from the Plenary Council, and an overview of the next steps in this watershed moment in the life of the Australian Catholic Church:

Late last week, the National Centre for Pastoral Research (NCPR) completed the statistical analysis and reported that more than 17,500 submissions had been lodged, thousands of which represented groups. In all, more than 222,000 people either made an individual submission or participated in a group discussion that culminated in a submission. Read more below or head straight to the story here.

The NCPR will continue its quantitative and qualitative analysis of the stories that people have shared over the coming weeks. From that analysis, which will include prayer and discernment, national themes for discernment will emerge and be announced in June. Reports will be published on each of the themes and allow ongoing involvement for the large numbers of people who participated during the Listening and Dialogue phase.

St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleep Out

On the afternoon and evening of Friday 24 May students on the Marcellin Campus (Years 7 – 12) at Newman College will have the opportunity to participate in the St Vincent de Paul Winter Sleep Out.

The theme of the sleepout is homelessness and aligns with the Australian Catholic Bishops’ 2018–2019 Social Justice Statement, titled; A Place to Call Home: Making a home for everyone in our land, which was written in response to the growing problem of homelessness in Australia.

Students participating in the Sleep Out will take part in advocacy activities that explore homelessness in Australia, Catholic Social Teaching and what they can do, as individuals and as a community, to help address the issues connected to homelessness.

Download the attached document for more information and an expression of interest form. If you have any questions regarding this event, please feel free to contact Miss Clare Cole, Leader of Youth Ministry and Advocacy, on 92049416 or alternatively at clare.cole@newman.wa.edu.au

Project Compassion 2019

The theme for Project Compassion 2019 is based around hope and giving Lent 100%. The journey to Easter, that we have been undertaking, is also about hope. Hope in the resurrected Christ, in God’s eternal love and mercy. Through your generous support of Caritas Australia, you are demonstrating the power of hope. Hope enables us to rise above our fears and helps those in great need to shape a better future for their communities.

Newman College has once again demonstrated a willingness to stand in solidarity with the poor and marginalised in our world. Your efforts towards Project Compassion bring hope to those around us. We thank you for your generosity. As we are still collating the donations from the three campuses, the final amount raised for Project Compassion will be communicated early next term. We thank you once again for your support.

College Production – Masquerade

At the beginning of April, the gorgeous musical adventure of Masquerade came to life over four performances in the Marist Auditorium at Newman College. The production proudly featured a cast and crew comprising of students from Years 7-12.

Masquerade is a beautiful and whimsical play based on the children’s picture book by Kit Williams. The picture book explores the story of the Moon who has fallen in love with the Sun. The Moon sends a hare named Jack on a journey to deliver an amulet, pose a riddle and tell him of her love. Jack encounters a series of characters on his journey and eventually finds the Sun. Unfortunately, he has lost the amulet and scrambles the riddle along the way, as he negotiates the earthly elements.

The stage adaptation of Masquerade has an additional storyline, included at the request of Kit Williams. Playwright, Kate Mulvany, was diagnosed and treated for a rare cancer as a child. During the difficult times during treatment for her illness Kate’s Godmother visited her bringing a copy of Kit Williams picture book Masquerade. Kate has said that during the journey through the book she was instantly transported out of her pain and sickness, into the magical world of the story. Consequently, Kate Mulvany has added the metaphorical journey of Joe to take place alongside Jack Hare’s journey. Joe is a young boy fighting cancer, enduring the treatment, trying to make sense of his illness, and the meaning of love.

In the first half of the story, the boy Joe and his mother Tessa read the book together, while Jack Hare’s quest is acted out around them. In the second half of the story the gruelling chemotherapy treatment, the emotional impact of Joe’s illness, and his mother’s attempts to stay positive drive the narrative. Joe and Tessa join Jack on the imaginative hunt for the amulet, as the lines between myth and reality become increasingly blurred for Joe, Tessa and the audience. At the heart of this magical musical adventure is the theme of courage, morality, dreams and love.

Newman Newbies: From the Vice Principal

Lisa Fogliani, Vice Principal

Our Vision for Learning, Shine through Discovery – Let your light shine (Matthew 5:16) challenges our learners to strive for personal excellence. Each student will encounter difficulty, success, failure and achievement. Adopting a growth mindset supports children to accept challenges as opportunities, failing as learning and to value perseverance and determination. By changing our language to support growth instead of grades, and encouraging children to believe they can improve supports resilient, engaged learners.

High Achievers Assembly

The high achieving students from the Class of 2018 were welcomed back for a special assembly where they were formally recognised for their 2018 WACE achievements. Their results exemplified the commitment of cohort to individual and collective excellence supported by outstanding teachers and supportive families. Jai Taylor addressed the assembly and provided sound advice to the Years 10, 11 and 12 students about how to navigate their final years of school. This included cultivating relationships with both teachers and friends, having balance, working hard, participating in school life and setting goals. CLICK HERE to view the WACA Results Brochure.

Newman Parents

On Monday 25 March, the College was honoured to host Dr Justin Coulson, one of Australia’s most respected relationships speakers, authors, and researchers to support our Newman Parents. Over 70 parents attended the morning session for parents of Early Education students, ‘9 Ways to a Resilient Child’, and 220 parents attended the Newman Parents evening session, ‘Respectful Relationships: Love at Home’. Newman Parents is part of the College’s commitment to parent partnership and being active participants in the education of their children, in collaboration with the College. The next event is taking place on Wednesday 12 June on the topic of Cybersafety.

Newman Newbies: From the Deputy Principal Mission and Catholic Identity

Daniel Lynch, Deputy Principal Mission and Catholic Identity

‘Trusting in God is both the most difficult and the easiest thing we are invited to do. It is the most difficult, because we always want to be in control, driven, in part, by the expectations of others, or ourselves. We are created by God. We are made in God’s image’ – Sean Cullen

Lent is a precious time of retreat for Catholics across the world. We know that Lent is a time of renewal in faith, hope and love so that we can enter more fully into the celebration of the Sacred Triduum of Jesus’ last supper, his suffering and death on the cross, and his glorious resurrection. As a PK-12 College community, our recognition of Shrove Tuesday, and the commencement of our Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday with liturgies across our three campuses invited each of us to walk with one another during this time of renewal and refocus.

Project Compassion

Project Compassion brings thousands of Australians together in solidarity with the world’s poor to help end poverty, promote justice and uphold dignity. This year’s Project Compassion theme is: GIVE LENT 100%. Each week of Lent, Caritas profiles a person who is involved in a Caritas project and always gives 100%. Click here to view these stories. Throughout Term 1, a number of activities have taken place across the three campuses to raise the College target of $20,000

Shrove Tuesday

Year 10 students sold pancakes on both the Marcellin and Lavalla Campuses on Shrove Tuesday (5 March) in support of Project Compassion. Students at the Marian campus also received pancakes, with the Kindy and Pre Primary students making theirs with the help of their teachers. A total of $816.85 was raised across the three campuses.

Years 7-12 Caritas Fast

Students were invited to participate in the Caritas Fast held on Wednesday 13 March. Over 150 students participated in the Fast which saw them forgo their usual meals throughout the school day. The students were given barley sugars at recess and a handful of cold, cooked rice at lunch and a muffin at the end of the day. This small amount of food aimed at helping students appreciate how little some people in our world have to eat. It was a fantastic day which helped raise $3630.95 for Project Compassion.

Pre Primary – Year 2 Walk for Water

On Tuesday 12 March, students on the Marian Campus took part in the Walk for Water initiative to help them understand how some children around the world walk for many kilometres just to get water each day. Students watched the story of Thandolwayo from Vietnam who risks her life each day just to bring water back for her family? Click here to hear her story.

PK-12 Family Mass

This is the third year that this important whole-of-College annual event has been celebrated. The evening gave families and staff the opportunity to come together as an intentional Catholic-Marist community, and to share the Eucharist together as we begin this year as a united community. The evening was also an opportunity for the College to commission the Year 6 and Year 12 student leaders for 2019.

Year 10 Damascus Day

The Newman College Ministry Plan seeks to invite all students into an experience of prayer and ongoing Christian discipleship. Across Years 3–10, all students are afforded an opportunity to experience an annual retreat day. The Year 10 Damascus Day, run by the Perth-based Youth Mission Team, was an opportunity provided to all students in Year 10 to stop, withdraw and reflect on the opportunities and abundance they are called into on their own personal journey, and the collective journey of the cohort.

Year 12 Retreat

During this important time of quiet reflection and time away from the usual school routines whilst on Retreat, the Year 12 students had an opportunity to seriously reflect upon their lives. Several aspects of personal growth and awareness were considered such as self-esteem, relationships and responsibilities, as well as developing a broader sense of community. While on Retreat students had opportunities to explore and deepen their spirituality and faith experiences through small group sharing, reflective prayer and celebrating the Eucharist.

Student Reflections

“This retreat has been a valuable experience to me as you get to hang out more with people you didn’t realise you would get along with so much, while still having the time to be with your mates too”.

“I came to Year 12 Retreat with the intention of just relaxing for a few days and to get away from schoolwork, but I ended up being able to really open up and get so much more out of it than I expected”.

“Year 12 Retreat encouraged me to get out of my comfort zone and get a richer understanding of my year group, it was an amazing experience”.

Year 11 Philippines Immersion – 2018

On Saturday 24 November, 16 Year 11 students and 3 accompanying staff members embarked on the 2018 Year 11 Philippines Immersion. The Philippines Immersion is another practical way in which our Marist communities at Newman College and sister school St Joseph’s School seek to build opportunities for solidarity, community engagement, relationships and connections between Western Australia and the Philippines. Since returning, these students have presented their experience of the Immersion to the PK-12 Newman College staff, and at the first Principal’s Assembly.

Please click here to view a video reflection prepared by the students.

Please click here to view and listen to an original poem, prepared by the students, with accompanying images to reflect on the experiences of the immersion.

As the year continues, our students will have a range of advocacy opportunities to promote justice and share their insights to grow a wider awareness among our College community.

Weekly Thursday Morning Community Mass

All parents, guardians and families across our PK-12 College are invited to attend the weekly Thursday morning Mass celebrated by Fr Mark Baumgarten. Our weekly Newman College Community Mass is an important way that we as a Catholic community seek to nourish and live-out our faith in community with one another. Click here to see a short video of the choir performing.
