Newman News Term 1 Week 2: From the Deputy Principal Mission and Catholic Identity

‘Holy Today’ is the national theme which comes to each Marist community across Australia in 2019 from Pope Francis’ reflections on the call to holiness in today’s world. Pope Francis emphasises that we don’t need to look any further than our own street to experience the presence of God:

‘I like to contemplate the holiness present in the patience of God’s people: in those parents who raise their children with immense love, in those men and women who work hard to support their families, in the sick, the elderly religious who never lose their smile. It is a holiness found in our next-door neighbours, those who, living in our midst, reflect God’s presence’ (Gaudate et Exultate n.7).

In 2019, our Newman College community will seek to live out Pope Francis’ call to each of us by embracing:

  1. Joy and a sense of Humour
  2. Boldness and Passion
  3. Life in Community

As we make this bold journey together as a PK-12 community in 2019, may each of us set out anew, to pass beyond what is familiar, to the fringes and beyond to shape our College as a place where Jesus is alive, and in which each of us lets our light shine.

PK-12 Family Mass

Thank you to all students, families, and supporters of Newman College who joined our PK-12 Family Mass on Wednesday 13 February on the Br Terence Gleeson Oval. This is the third year that this important whole-of-College annual event has been celebrated. The evening gave us the opportunity to come together as an intentional Catholic-Marist community, and to share the Eucharist together as we begin this year as a united community. The evening was also an opportunity for us to commission the Year 6 and Year 12 student leaders for 2019. The College is grateful for the support of neighbouring clergy who are great friends to Newman College, and who concelebrated our PK-12 Family Mass:

  • Fr Joseph Tran Parish Priest, St Francis Xavier Armadale
  • Fr Grant Gorddard – Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Scarborough
  • Fr Peter Hoang – Parish Priest, Our Lady of the Rosary, Doubleview
  • Fr Emmanuel-tv Dimobi – Parish Priest, Holy Spirit, City Beach

It was a fantastic opportunity to network with those currently working within Youth Ministry in Marist Schools across Australia.

Laudato Si’ (On Care for Our Common Home)

Laudato Si’ is the second encyclical from Pope Francis. In it he appeals to “every person living on this planet” for an inclusive dialogue about how we are shaping the future of our planet. Pope Francis calls the Church and the world to acknowledge the urgency of our environmental challenges and to join him in embarking on a new path. This encyclical is written with both hope and resolve, looking to our common future with candor and humility. There’s an opportunity to take part in a Laudato Si’ weekend (8 – 10 March) in NSW. Please click here for further information.

PK-12 Family Mass

On Wednesday 13 February our PK-12 College community of staff, students and families gathered together on the Br Terence Gleeson Oval to celebrate the new school year, share in the Eucharist and witness the commissioning of the Year 6 and Year 12 Student Leaders.

This Mass is an integral part of our College life as we seek to continue to celebrate our Christian story and our College theme this year, consistent with other Marist Schools nationally, “We are called to be Holy by living our lives with love and by bearing witness today”.

Newman News Term 1 Week 2: From the Head of Primary

Welcome back to the start of another exciting year at Newman College, one filled with hope and joy for the journey ahead. We especially welcome the Pre Kindy and Kindy students starting their schooling at Newman College. Our hope is that all new families feel welcome and at peace within our College community. The students have made a wonderful start and have settled quickly into the routine of their new classes. This is because of the hard work put in by the staff who were well prepared and eager to meet your child. This relationship is critical to our College’s Wellbeing Program and ultimately the success of each student. The classroom teacher is your first point of contact should you need anything regarding your child’s learning or wellbeing. We look forward to continuing in partnership with your family this year.

If you do not have an email address or internet access, please advise Mandy Keeling, Student Data Administrator so we can add you to the Consent2Go paper process Mandy.Keeling@newman.wa.edu.au or 9204 9434

Food Allergy Reminder

As a result of recent news relating to the dangers of food allergies, Newman College would like to offer a reminder to all families. Newman College is a ‘Nut Aware’ school. It is NOT nut free. Families should be advised that the College cannot guarantee the absence of all nut products or traces of nuts within food across the College. Parents are strongly encouraged to speak with their child discouraging the sharing of food with others. It is pertinent that parents of any child with an identified allergy has completed a Medical Action Plan and discussed this with their child’s teacher. The College Canteen does provide a ‘Nut Aware’ service, but cannot guarantee that food and beverages served from the Canteen do not contain traces of Nuts, Crustaceans, Fish, Milk, Eggs, Sesame, Soybean and Wheat.

If families are reliant on the Canteen for the provision of food and beverages to a child WITH an allergy, they are advised to contact the Canteen Manager, Donna McFadden. The Canteen is available daily for children of the College. For details please click here.
