Newman News Term 3 Week 8: From the Principal

Literacy Collective

One the most pleasing outcomes of the development of Shine through Discovery – Let Your Light Shine (Matthew 5:16) has been the alignment of the PK-12 College. Four years on, we are more connected than ever in the faith and learning continuum from the sandpit of Marian Campus to the Siena Learning Centre at Marcellin.

This was highlighted this week at our College Staff Professional Learning Meeting. A key strategic priority of our Annual School Improvement Plan is to implement a coherent sequenced based framework for Literacy PK-12.

This year each teaching unit in the Primary School and faculty in the Secondary School have been collaborating to achieve this strategic priority. This has been supported by a wider Catholic Education WA (CEWA) initiative called the Literacy Collective where staff have received professional learning on the use of student data to improve literacy outcomes. The primary beneficiary of this project has been the increased student engagement in literacy and overall experience of learning.

The teaching staff presented their strategies at the meeting with video footage of our students and their response to this program. Their voice articulated a more collaborative engagement in their learning in the comprehension of functional and critical literacy. An example of this is demonstrated in our PK-2 Program. Click here to watch the video.

As a teacher, the benefits of this project have been in the enthusiasm and commitment of our teaching staff to align and collaborate in our professional practice. In the Primary school this has been exemplified by the introduction of guided planning in each unit to ensure a consistency of approach in each class across each year group.

Our staff and students have developed a culture of presentation as a consequence of our Vision for Learning. We have deprivatized our classrooms, seeking to be more accountable, opening up our practice for critique with a view to support each individual student in their learning pathway. Staff are to be commended on this development and we look forward to our students bearing the fruit of their work.

Proposed International Marist Education Network

Globally, the Marist family is exploring the concept of an International Marist Schools Network. Echoing calls from the last Marist General Chapter held in Colombia in 2017 and the Marist International Mission Assembly held in Kenya in 2014, a group has been convened of Marists in leadership positions from different regions throughout the world to lead a process of consultation and discernment.

On the Feast of the Assumption 2019, people working in and associated with Marist schools in 80 countries across the globe are invited to respond to a short survey which has been translated into the four major language groups used by Marists: English, Spanish, French, and Portuguese.

Marist educators throughout the world are being invited to:

  • imagine the reality of an international network of Marist schools as a global family with an evangelizing action rooted in the world of school and education;
  • explore together the benefits this could bring to the children and young people whom Marists serve, as well as to their families.

Parents and Guardians are being invited to complete a short online survey. The survey has ambitious participation targets, which underscore the critical importance of every Marist educator’s voice – 100% of Marist Principals, 100% of Marist teachers and staff, 15% of students, 5-10% of parents, and an open invitation to all Marist Brothers and those Marist lay teachers who have moved to new employment or have retired. Similar to our own Australian Plenary Council consultation, the data gathered will be processed through computerised qualitative research tools, in this case undertaken by the internationally renowned Creativity Laboratory at the Marist University in Porto Alegre, Brazil.

I therefore invite parents and guardians to participate in the survey which will be open until 15 October 2019. Please click here to access the survey.

Remar Blue Solidarity Camp

The Remar Blue Solidarity camp ran from Wednesday 28 August to Tuesday 3 September in Mullewa, Western Australia, a small farming town 470km North-East of Perth. Following preparation sessions, the students lived and worked alongside the community of Mullewa, where they had a packed itinerary that involved various services to the Mullewa community including helping to host their annual Agriculture and Wildflower Shows, working with the students at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Primary School and hosting their school disco. Weekly Thursday Morning Community Mass (Champagnat Chapel – 8.10am – 8.35am)

All parents, guardians and families across our PK-12 College are invited to attend the weekly Thursday morning Mass. Our weekly Newman College Community Mass is an important way that we as a Catholic community seek to nourish and live-out our faith in community with one another.

AUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC YOUTH FESTIVAL

The Australian Catholic Youth Festival (ACYF) is a national gathering of Catholic young people established by the Australian Catholic Bishops Conference (ACBC). It exists to provide young Australians with opportunities to deepen their relationship with Jesus, be empowered to be disciples in the world today and encounter and celebrate the vitality of the Church in Australia. This year the ACYF will be held in Perth between 8 – 10 December. Young people between the ages of 14 and 35 from around Australia will be invited to:

  • Participate in high-quality formative and experiential opportunity for young Catholics to encounter Jesus Christ, in the context of the Catholic Church in Australia;
  • Listen to and discuss the issues and challenges in the lives of young Catholics in Australia;
  • Engage with local examples and connections of vocations, social action, liturgy and prayer, Catholic music and faith formation.

Students in Year 9 from the College will be invited to apply to attend ACYF. This event will take the place of the Remar Embarkation Camp this year.

Remar Blue Solidarity Camp

Remar seeks to form Christian leaders who are prepared to stand in solidarity with those experiencing disadvantage and injustice, and who are motivated to take action.

To this end, 21 Year 11 Remar Blue rowers (students) embarked on a week-long Solidarity Camp. As one student explains: “During the camp I learnt more about solidarity. Solidarity is not only giving out a hand to help others but to experience life with others, side by side. Having compassion and serving others.”

The Remar students slept on the floor of the school, cooked their own meals and worked as a group to provide each service to the community all of which helped to deepen their experience of communal living and form deeper relationships with each other.

“I learnt that service is necessary for any community to work and that good leaders aren’t necessarily those who delegate the work, but those who just help to get it done. I also gained a sense of community and family within my own caravel.” (Reflection from a student).

Ultimately, the camp was successful in helping the rowers understand solidarity through lived experience and helping them to realise that they have the capacity to be the ‘hands and feet of Christ’.

A huge thank you goes out to Miss Genna Spadaccini (Blue Helm), Miss Jamie Pedler, Mr Matthew Wilson and Br Paul Murphy for giving up their time to accompany our students on this special journey. We also thank Mrs Jill Hollands (Principal of Our Lady of Mt Carmel, Mullewa) and the Mullewa community for their hospitality and hosting our students during their time away.

Clare Cole Carter, Leader of Youth Ministry and Advocacy PK-12

Newman News Term 3 Week 8: From the Vice Principal

Learning happens in a variety of spaces; places where our interactions with one another shift from the formality of the classroom to the sporting field, playground or workplace learning experience. The great strength of our PK-12 College community, is how students come together to support learning and Wellbeing initiatives. This term, students from Marcellin Campus have supported the Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival, Marian Campus Early Childhood initiatives and our very successful STEM Festival. The collaboration the students encounter during these opportunities reflects the intent of our Vision for Learning, Shine through Discovery and how we seek to develop skills of communication and conversation between students and peers. I extend my sincere thanks to our teaching staff who plan and prepare for these authentic and meaningful experiences.

CDP Update

The College has entered the final stage of planning prior to the commencement of the Learning Hub building project. Five organisations have accepted the opportunity to tender for the building contract, with the tender closing next Thursday 19 September. Following approval of the preferred builder to proceed, it is likely that possession of the site will be handed to the contractor at or around the commencement of Term 4.

In addition to the Learning Hub project, the footings for the new Lavalla / Marcellin bridge were installed this week. The bridge will be completed during October, with associated upgrades to pedestrian paths taking place shortly after. It is expected that the bridge will be in use by late October / early November.

Furthermore, the major upgrade to the artificial cricket wicket practice area and storage shed is now complete. This will see the College cricketers enjoy new facilities, with wonderful access to equipment which is now housed directly adjacent to the practice area. The shed also delivers upgraded storage facilities for the Outdoor Education program, replacing the older Sea Containers.

The College is very excited about the current program of works which will see all students benefit from the investment into these areas. For further information on the Learning Hub Project please click here.

Catholic Performing Arts Festival

The closing concert for the Catholic Performing Arts Festival will be held on Monday September 16 at the Perth Concert Hall. Newman College has the honour of performing the Acknowledgement of Country song, Koort Doodjarak Yewool (Heart Song) in collaboration with the Madjitil Moorna Choir accompanied by James Web.  We acknowledge Music Teacher, Nicole Boddy who wrote the lyrics and melody. This is a unique opportunity for the College, and I acknowledge the efforts of the staff and students involved in this initiative, in particular the leadership and creativity of Mrs Maree Grayden, Leader of Learning Arts PK-12. Congratulations to all students who performed during the festival and for the support of their families. Click here to see a full list of all awards.

Newman Arts Festival Parent Support / Volunteers Required

The 2019 Newman Arts Festival is taking place in Term 4 Week 1 (Wednesday 16 – Friday 18 October). The three-day event will showcase 2D and 3D artworks produced by our PK-12 students, performances by our dance, drama and music students, free activities and a Parent Soiree.

This event would not be possible without the support from our entire PK-12 College community. We are in need of a number of parent volunteers to assist in the following roles:

Volunteers to hang student art, Monday 14 October (non-school day) and Tuesday 15 October, between 9.00am and 3.00pm
Require 3 – 6 volunteers each day to help the Art Teachers hang numerous pieces of student art. We understand it may be difficult to commit to a full day, so 2 – 3 hours would be fantastic.

Volunteers to serve food, Friday 18 October, 6.00pm – 9.00pm
Assist with serving food at the Parent Soiree (no experience necessary).

Volunteers to serve drinks, Friday 18 October, 6.00pm – 9.00pm
Assist with serving drinks at the Parent Soiree (RSA required).

Your help would be greatly appreciated, please contact the Volunteer Coordinator, Janine Gatto if you are able to assist thegatts@iinet.net.au | Phone/Text 0418 935 122

ACC Athletics Carnival Update

The 2019 ACC Division 1 Athletics Carnival is being held next Wednesday 18 September at the WA Athletics Stadium.

Confidence and self-belief are a major factor in performance, and this has been built up with weeks of hard work on the training track. Athletes have also formed a solid fitness base through their Winter Club Sports as well as external training groups. There is great spirit in the team this year and we go into the carnival confident of giving of our best and looking forward to the challenge of competing with the best schools.

Upcoming Training and Events

  • Monday 16/9 PCG: Full Team Meeting
  • Monday 16/9 Period 4: Relay Practice
  • Tuesday 17/9: Team Pasta Lunch
  • Wednesday 18/9: ACC Div 1 Carnival

On the carnival day, all competitors are required to meet at the College Sports Complex at 7.00am dressed in the full College Physical Education Uniform (white socks, college tracksuit). The students will be given a College Athletics singlet and competitor number before being bussed to the stadium at 7.45am for our team warm up.

First events commence at 9.00am. The students will return to the College for a normal 3.15pm dismissal.

Download ACC Athletics Program

Team members are to bring food and drink for the entire day as there will be no canteen facilities and they should be prepared for all weather conditions (College hat and College tracksuit). All team members are aware of what events they are competing in and should prepare themselves accordingly.

As is the nature of these events, it is necessary to list a number of students as reserves. We understand that those who miss out will be disappointed, however their contribution over weeks of solid training is highly regarded by teachers, coaches and peers. Reserves should still prepare to compete as there are always changes to the team on the day.

Years 3-6 Athletics Carnival

Congratulations to all our Year 3-6 students on a competitive day of athletics. It was very successful carnival with students engaged all day in track and field events as well as novelty events and ball games. Students showcased their athletic skills and celebrated the achievements of their team. Click here to read more and see more photos from the day.
