Development Project

Learning Hub Fly Through

From the Principal – Mr John Finneran

It is with much excitement that I announce to our Newman College community the approval to commence a major Capital Development Project in Term 4 2019.  The Learning Hub Project will see the oldest buildings at the Marcellin Campus, Blocks C and W, redeveloped. The Learning Hub is the culmination of a planning process which commenced in 2016 with the commissioning of our Capital Development Plan.

There has been extensive planning over the last three years which has included an Educational Brief that was developed after the 2016-2017 community consultation of staff, students and families.  This Brief and subsequent Design reflects our Vision for Learning Shine through Discovery – Let your light shine (Matthew 5:16) which animates our learning community to Challenge, Collaborate, Create and Celebrate who we are and what we seek to achieve.  The new Learning Hub will encourage agility, movement and flexible learning environments to support a range of formal and informal learning activities, and provide opportunities for connections between the year groups, staff and the broader community. The Learning Hub will be a resource for children in Years 3 – 12 to enjoy. In particular, it will provide  flexible learning spaces, break out areas, presentation zones and library resources that will service this broader student cohort.

The Learning Hub will provide a focus for the College by joining several existing buildings in both function and circulation. The spaces will provide opportunities for informal gathering of students, connection and movement to the forecourt and Chapel for large gatherings, space for informal learning and technology resources, as well as direct pathway system to Lavalla via a new bridge. The grand stair from Founders Court into the Learning Hub will allow for students to access the Learning Hub from both sides.

The Learning Hub incorporates:

  • A space inside C Block with a library and quiet meeting areas
  • A new atrium over Marist Court
  • Senior study areas, group meeting spaces and upgraded toilets under W Block
  • Extension and refurbishment of classrooms in C Block on the upper floors
  • A bridge connecting C Block and W Block
  • A roof will cover the entirety of Marist Court

This web page is intended to provide full details of the Learning Hub Project and the operational imperatives of the College.  Below you will find answers to commonly asked questions relating to the build. If you do not find what you are looking for, there is a form below that can be completed to seek the information you require. Furthermore, a community forum will be hosted in late May, at which time representatives of the Project Team will be able to address the significant build process, timelines and associated impact across the College.

We look forward to providing you with further information via this web page as the project progresses.
