Year 10 Outdoor Ed Exhibition

On Wednesday 13 November, 70 students from Year 10 Australian Bush Outdoor Education completed their three-day expedition in the Wellington Dam region. Students were challenged to some hot temperatures with all three days in the mid-30s. The first day saw all classes complete different hikes on the Munda-Biddi trail over 15km long, a tough task in hot conditions. For the next two days the classes rotated between rafting, abseiling and team building activities. These activities enabled students to develop their interpersonal and personal skills in the natural environment. Overall it was a brilliant camp and I hope all the Year 10 students gained many memories from it.

Michael Van Der Heever, Outdoor Education Coordinator

“The Year 10 Outdoor Ed Camp started very early on Wednesday morning at the ODE shed to do any last-minute packing and to weigh the bags. The bus ride consisted of listening to music, playing cards, talking and just mucking around in general. My classes first activity was hiking. It was a long and tiring hike on the Munda-Biddi trail (which is a mountain biking track). We ended up walking 16km to Honeymoon Pool which was our main camping spot. By this time we were all hot, sweaty and tired, all anyone wanted to do was have a dip in the stream. The next morning, we were all up and ready to go for our second activity by 7.30am. This activity was based around team-building and the aim was to get all of our hiking bags across the river, using ropes and the knots we have learned in class, without letting them get wet. Our third activity was rafting. It was so much fun, people ended up swimming from one raft to the other and trying to capsize each other. We then had to walk back to Honeymoon Pool carrying all the boats! Once there we caught a bus ride to our final campsite, Potters Gregory which is right on the Wellington Dam’s edge. On the morning of the last day, we had to hike to the Wellington Dam Wall to do our final activity which was abseiling. We did it in the Quarry Wall which was 16 meters high and had a wonderful view (I recommend having a go even if you’re scared of heights!). I managed to do a 720-degree spin (2 spins) on the wall but one of the boys beat me by doing a 1080-degree spin (3 spins). After a few hours, we left on the bus and headed home, and that ride consisted of sleeping, lots of sleeping.

All in all, I loved the experience and would do it again and again. I do have to say a big thank you to all the teachers that put up with our classes, and a huge thank you to Mr Gregory who put so much thought and effort into this camp that he only managed to remember to pack one change of clothing. If you are interested in doing Outdoor Education in the years to come, I 100% recommend you do it. The opportunities are once in a lifetime and you will love it all the way.”

Junior Water Polo Competition

Well done to the Junior Girls and Boys Water Polo teams which competed in the Junior Water Polo Competition this week at HBF Stadium. The girls were new to the game and were competitive throughout and really enjoyed the day. The boys were Runner Up Champions, narrowly losing the Grand Final to CBC 6-5. A big thank you to Nathan Carbone and the Newman Water Polo Club for their expert coaching and support.

Marist Cricket Carnival

The 1st X1 Cricket Team play two fixtures next week against Bunbury Catholic College (Monday) and John Forrest SHS (Wednesday) in preparation for the 47th Marist Cricket Carnival. The Carnival is being held in Lismore, NSW and the team is at the business end of their preparation. The boys fly out on Saturday 30 November. All players are primed to give their best and are driven to uphold the Marist values of participation, friendship and enjoyment both on and off the pitch.

Marist Sporting Carnivals are National elite competitions. Newman students have the opportunity to represent the school and tour interstate with basketball, netball and cricket. All younger students involved in these sports should have an ambition to work hard and persevere to one day be a part of the tradition.

IPSHA Athletics Competition

At the recent IPSHA Athletics Competition, Newman College was represented with outstanding performances by two students who convincingly broke the IPSHA record for their events. Ty Patterson (Year 5) set a Turbo-Jav record with a throw of 30.32cm and Annabelle Lynch (Year 3) set a new triple jump record with a jump of 6.81m. The Year 5 4 x 100 relay team also completed their event in record time. Well done!

IPSHA Touch Rugby Carnival

Last Thursday 14 November, Mrs Jemma Bulmer and Mrs Renae Zelich took our interschool team to participate in the IPSHA Touch Rugby Carnival at John XXIII College. 24 students from Year 6 formed two teams and played seven fast-paced, action packed games in 40 degree heat. I extend my thanks to Mrs Bulmer and Mrs Zelich for leading our wonderful students throughout the day.

“We played against many schools with a high level of sportsmanship. Both teams played exceptionally well across the day, developing our skills and tactics throughout every game. One team finished the day undefeated while the other team won all games except for one. We all had lots of fun.” Leo Mason, Year 6 Student

Newman News Term 4 Week 4: From the Vice Principal

Our Vision for Learning aims to support students to build a strong foundation of knowledge and skills as a gateway to discovery. We acknowledge that the development of critical and creative thinkers is paramount to equip our learners to be agents of change in an ever-changing world. Our commitment to foster creativity can be seen across the College; from the IDEAS Lab at Marian, to STEM and Coding opportunities at Lavalla through to our upcoming SOLVE IT program for students in Years 7-9. I commend our teaching staff for exploring new and innovative curriculum ideas and contemporary pedagogy to reach the learner of 2019.

Newman News Term 4 Week 4: From the Principal

Cyclic Review

The College has just undergone a School Cyclic Review conducted by Catholic Education Western Australia (CEWA). A School Cyclic Review focuses on the effectiveness of a school’s engagement with self-review, the impact of self-review on school improvement and the future directions for the improvement of student outcomes that the school has identified. The data sources for this review included parents, College Advisory Council, staff, and students coupled with the College’s own self review statement, Strategic Improvement Plan, Annual School Improvement Plans and Annual Reports.

The feedback from the review across the domains of Catholic Identity, Education, Community and Stewardship were very affirming for the College. The review report specifically identified the College’s Vision for Learning Shine Through Discovery – Let Your Light Shine as a clearly defined strategic and operational direction of the College. It notes Teaching and Learning are student driven and data informed and a learning culture that encourages growth in all students is clearly visible. Underpinning this strategic priority is our renewed focus on Catholic Identity through the implementation of our Ministry Plan and commitment to the formation of the spiritual life of students and staff.

Strategic Plan

The timing of this review is significant as we enter the consultation phase of our new strategic plan. Newman College is owned by the Trustees of the Marist Brothers and governed by Marist Schools Australia (MSA). We are a member of Catholic Education Commission Western Australia (CECWA) and as such receive our Federal and State funding as a group member of CECWA. Our strategic priorities for the future will need to focus on the sustainability of our PK-12 College as an affordable Catholic School that provides excellent teaching and learning for students. In an increasingly competitive educational precinct, it is an imperative that our College is agile and innovative, creating opportunities for our students while supporting their wellbeing as they navigate their learning and life journey.

Consultation

This week we completed our first round of consultation with parents and staff on their priorities for the next strategic plan. Parent attendance was low but the feedback nonetheless salient and constructive. We intend to curate the information we have collated to date and then seek further feedback from our families in the new year. For the interest of parents, the following questions were put to those who attended:

  1. In your experience, what is unique about Newman College?
  2. Why did you enrol your son/daughter at Newman College?
  3. What does Newman College do best of all?
  4. If you were Principal of Newman College for a day, what would you change/fix?
  5. What school factors do you believe contribute most positively to your child’s learning at school?
  6. How might the school further assist your child’s learning?
  7. What can Newman College do to further assist you as a parent?
  8. How would you describe your overall experience as a parent of a child/children attending Newman College?
  9. Would you recommend Newman College to your friends? Please give reasons to support your response.

We will also be engaging in student voice in determining our priorities for the future. What was clear from the consultation and the recommendations from the cyclic review, was the need to ensure that the College is consistent in its application of teaching and learning. To this end, our work with teachers to build their individual capacity as professionals, aligning our practices, and to grow the students’ learning experience is our intent.

Developing New Learning Experiences

Singapore Learning Immersion

Twenty five Years 9 and 10 students and four members of staff have been in Singapore this week as part of a newly developed partnership with Republic Polytechnic (RP). RP is a post school educational institution that seeks to nurture innovative, entrepreneurial and cultured professionals. Our partnership and this learning immersion aims to foster and challenge our students and staff to be resilient, global thinkers; students who are agile, collaborative and embracing of the demands of the 21st Century. The program for the week was centered on collaborating with RP students on problem-based learning activities. The program aims to develop the following skills:

  • Effective self-directed learning and critical problem inquiry
  • Effective collaboration and problem-solving
  • Effective reasoning, argumentation and presentation

Working and collaborating with students in this industry-based learning environment fostering creativity and entrepreneurial skills has been life changing for many of our students.

The benefits of this experience will be in shaping our learning programs into the future. Staff will become more adept in creating learning experiences that foster the aforementioned skills. Supporting these programs will be learning spaces that reflect our strategic intent as exemplified in the development of our new Learning Hub (due for completion December 2020). To this end our students across our College will benefit as we continue to develop our teachers and students to be agile and flexible learners in our ever-changing world.

Newman News Term 4 Week 4: From the Ministry, Outreach and Advocacy Team

Month of November

During the month of November, Catholics are invited to remember all those who have gone before us marked with the sign of faith. Beginning the month of November is the feast of All Saints (Friday 1 November), followed by the feast of All Souls (Saturday 2 November).

On 1 November, we remembered the countless multitude of men, women and children, including our families, friends, Newman College and Marist community, who are now in heaven. We continue to be inspired by the qualities they revealed in their lives: humility, a concern for justice, gentleness, purity of heart, mercy, and courage. We take comfort in knowing that from their home in heaven they intercede for us still.

You are invited to join our Thursday morning community Masses at 8.10am to pray with and for those who have gone before us, both as saints, and those who you would like to remember in this month of November. Throughout November, staff and students are invited to write a prayer, or the name of a loved-one, and place it in a sealed box which will be placed at the front of the altar for each of our Masses in November. This box will be in the foyer of the Champagnat Chapel for the month of November. In this way, we as a community are able to unite our prayers in support and remembrance of each other, and to those who have traveled this way before us.

Remembrance Day

At 11am on 11 November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. Remembrance Day falls on the 11th of November each year. On the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month, a minute’s silence is observed and dedicated to those soldiers who died fighting to protect the nations they served. Red poppies are worn on blazers, shirts, jumpers and other items of clothing on Remembrance Day to remember those who died during a war. Poppies were among the first plants that came from the battlefields of northern France and Belgium during World War I. On this day, we remember and pray for all those known and unknown who lost their lives in war.

Mary our Good Mother, pray for us.

Year 5 Leadership Retreat

The Year 5 Leadership Retreat was held on Friday 25 October, run by the 24:7 School Ministry team in the Lavalla hall. It was a fun day of games, activities and faith formation.

With the help of some Superheroes, there were examples of good leaders that display important characteristics that we can learn from. We looked at what qualities they show and also looked at the greatest superhero of all, Jesus, who showed us all the great leadership qualities in his life.

It was a fantastic day overall and the Year 5 cohort gained a lot from their experience, ready to take on leadership opportunities in 2020!

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal

The annual St Vincent de Paul Society Christmas Appeal provides hope, comfort and dignity to over 3000 families in Western Australia who will be struggling during the Christmas season. As a Catholic school educating in the Marist Tradition, Newman College seeks to reach out and serve those in our community following the example set by Jesus in the Scriptures.

Items for the St Vincent de Paul Society Christmas Appeal will be collected across the College’s three campuses at Marian, Lavalla and Marcellin. In 2019, Newman College will be supporting the St Vincent de Paul Society at both St Cecilia’s Church in the Parish of Floreat / Wembley, as well as at Our Lady of the Rosary, Doubleview.

A letter was sent home to parents outlining the items requested for each campus, as well as details about collection points.

2020 Sacramental Programs

According to Archdiocesan Guidelines, children who have been Baptised Catholics are prepared for the Sacrament of Reconciliation in Year 3, for First Communion in Year 4 and for Confirmation in Year 6. These Sacraments are to be received in this order.

Under the Archdiocesan Policy (2008), schools prepare children for the Sacraments in their Religious Education Program and children go to their own Parish to receive the Sacraments. The Local Zone of Priests which represents the parishes of Subiaco, City Beach, Claremont, Cottesloe/Mosman Park, Doubleview, Nedlands, Shenton Park and Floreat/Wembley has been implementing this policy over a number of years, as have other zones.

As Newman College is not a Parish school, parents will need to approach their parish to enrol their child to receive Confirmation, Communion and Reconciliation. For this reason Newman College does not conduct its own Confirmation, First Communion or First Reconciliation ceremonies. Click here for the full list of Parish contacts.

If parents have any queries concerning the above, please contact the Acting Religious Education Coordinator Primary, Renae Zelich renae.zelich@newman.wa.edu.au

Newman News Term 4 Week 4: From the Leader of Wellbeing Primary

Personal Devices and Communication

A reminder that we ask for all communication between parents and students during the school day to be directed via the Campus office by calling 9416 9700. Utilising teacher emails or Seesaw will not necessarily relay the message in time.

During school time, students utilise their designated device (iPad) as a learning tool under the direction of their teachers. Using their iPads for non-school related communication during school hours is considered misuse of their device. We are aware that students may also have other personal devices such as mobile phones or smart-watches, please note that neither is a school requirement or uniform item. If parents choose to provide children with these devices, the school’s position remains that they are not to be used for communication throughout the school day. These devices should be stored either in their school bag or students may ask for a safe place to be provided by the classroom teacher.

While the College will endeavour to ensure that all private property is treated with respect and care, the College accepts no responsibility for lost, stolen or damaged phones or devices.

Thank you for your continued support in this matter, please contact your child’s classroom teacher or myself if you have any queries or concerns.

Primary Girls Dockers Cup

On Wednesday 6 November, approximately 30 students from Years 5 and 6 represented Newman College in the Primary Girls Dockers Cup AFL competition. The competition focuses on player development, with all teams participating in a skills development session run by the AFLW Dockers players. The girls played four rounds demonstrating a high level of skill, sportsmanship and enthusiasm.

Participant, Rio Angus (Year 6) described the day:

“The girls had four rounds to play not including the bye. The girls did really well throughout the day, with Newman White getting into the Grand Final and Newman Blues giving the competition their best shot too. Good job girls!”

Thanks to Mrs Jemma Bulmer, Physical Education Teacher for organising and preparing the students for the event and Mr Scott Harvie for his assistance in coaching.

Values for Life: Operation Empathy

Yesterday, the Year 4 Unit took part in a day of team building and empathy workshops presented by the Year 4 Teachers and Tim Powell from Values for Life. The first phase of the morning involved an ‘Amazing Race’ style challenge where students had to follow clues and problem solve in order to achieve a common goal. They were then led in an interactive workshop on empathy and celebrating differences led by Tim.

We were also thrilled to welcome our Year 4 parents in the evening for a workshop led by Tim, reflecting on strategies and approaches to resilience and self control following-on from the learning experiences of the children from the day.

Many thanks to the Ms Davina Sankar, Mrs Sharon MacBean and Mr Scott Harvie for their organisation and facilitation of this day.
