Newman News Term 3 Week 6: From the Leader of Wellbeing Primary

This past fortnight has been a busy time for the Lavalla Campus, celebrating diverse opportunities for our students in Book Week events, athletics, and teaching and learning initiatives engaging our parent community. At our Monday assembly this week, I challenged the Lavalla students to apply their best effort to each and every activity they were to undertake at school, and so many of the students have taken on that challenge wholeheartedly. We are a school that celebrates each other and our successes, and this week saw our students relate to each other with numerous opportunities to celebrate. I look forward to continuing this engagement as a community of learning throughout the remainder of this term.

Lavalla Parent Workshops

Last night we welcomed parents to join in a variety of learning and wellbeing workshops being offered at the Lavalla Campus. Our dedicated teachers have worked hard to formulate workshops in literacy, numeracy, digital literacy and growth mindset.

Workshops offered were:

  • Growth Mindset – building resilience through the development of a growth mindset
  • Digital Literacy – the place and use of iPads at school and home, digital citizenship and online safety
  • Middle Primary Mental Maths – strategies and games for Years 3-4
  • Upper Primary Mental Maths – strategies and games for Years 5-6
  • Manga High – utilising Manga High for the development of mathematics skills with Years 5-6
  • Literacy – decoding text and comprehension strategies and their importance in literacy development

Parents will receive access to electronic resources from last night’s workshops today. I thank all parents who attended the workshops and our staff for their ongoing commitment to engaging with our parent community in order to support our students.

Book Week

Book Week at Lavalla has been a wonderful celebration of reading and literacy across Years 3-6. Our Librarian, Mrs Alison Le Dan, has excelled herself yet again in providing our students with a variety of rich experiences including visits by authors, illustrators, storytellers, and embracing their creativity and love for books and characters with our parade.

The Book Week Parade took place in our College Auditorium on Friday 23rd August. It was wonderful to see each of our students (and teachers!) display and share their costumes with the campus. Click here to see more photos from the Book Week events.

I would especially like to congratulate Altea Menzies Stewart (Year 4) who was awarded 1st place in the West Australian’s Design an Ad Competition. Altea had to design an ad based on a company of her choice, choosing Telethon Speech and Hearing.

Marcellin Award

Congratulations Stefano Rapanaro from 6 Red who was acknowledged today in receiving the Lavalla Campus Marcellin Award.

Stefano has been recognised by many members of staff as a generous and humble student. He gives of his best in all aspects of school life and puts others needs before himself. He demonstrates leadership in both obvious and small ways, understanding that setting an example is important and he can be relied upon to take on responsibilities and fulfill them completely. Stefano also appreciates that simply greeting people with kindness shows respect and consideration, and he does this each and everyday.

Stefano takes on all opportunities as a chance to be involved or learn something new, and challenges are always accepted. He lives out our Vision for Learning, Shine through Discovery everyday, and epitomizes the College ethos and values, showing pride in being a Newman student. We are incredibly grateful to have Stefano as a member of our community.

The Marcellin Award at Lavalla is presented at campus assemblies to one student selected by the Leadership Team from submitted nominations.
