Remembrance Day

On Thursday 11 November at 11am, Marcellin students gathered on Founder’s Court to commemorate Remembrance Day. The service was led by students in Years 7 – 10 and Mrs Bagg, who described the significance of Remembrance Day to our community. Students displayed reverence and respect throughout the service. Thank you to all staff and students involved in the service.

Year 10 Extended PCG – Discussion Panel

Last Wednesday, Year 10 students participated in a panel discussion during Extended PCG. The aim of the panel discussion was to provide Year 10 students a forum to ask questions about topics linked to the Keeping Safe Curriculum, the Year 10 Wellbeing Program, and the Year 10 Health Curriculum. Students had an opportunity to ask an Emergency Department Doctor and Newman College staff questions on the following topics:

  • Protective Behaviours
  • Decision Making and Risk Taking
  • Personal Safety
  • Drugs and Alcohol
  • Healthy Relationships
  • Mental Health and Wellbeing

Students were invited to submit questions prior to the discussion panel and our panel members were able to provide our Year 10 students with educated and expert responses. The Year 10 students engaged in the discussion in a thoughtful and mature manner. It is our hope that this experience will allow students to feel empowered to make good and positive choices going forward, and that the discussion help students to expand their knowledge to make informed decisions as young adults.

Year 7 2022 Transition Workshop

The final Year 7 2022 Transition Workshop was held on Tuesday afternoon. The workshop was focused on Getting to Know the School. Our 2022 Year 7 students were welcomed by their Leader of Wellbeing, Mrs Bramanto, and shared afternoon with their PCG. Current Year 7 students led a Q&A session with the students. Students then participated in two activities; learning to use their combination lock and learning to read a timetable. They were then given a timetable and were challenged to follow the timetable and find their way around the campus. Students worked together to complete the challenges successfully. Thanks to our current Year 7 students, Year 10 Peer Support students and staff for their assistance in facilitating this workshop.

We can’t wait to welcome our 2022 Year 7 students at the start of next year!

Year 10 Humanities Incursion – Cecilia Hammond MP

Yesterday, the Year 10 Humanities classes had the opportunity to meet Ms Cecilia Hammond MP, member for Curtin in the House of Representatives. Ms Hammond spoke to us about her involvement in multiple parliamentary committees such as intelligence and education. Ms Hammond discussed topics that link to the current Year 10 Humanities curriculum and provided a strong insight into how parliament is working in the current context of 2021. Ms Hammond discussed the GDP and the economic growth that our country is experiencing in the middle of a pandemic. We got an insight into the role of a parliamentarian, what a day in her life looks like and an understanding of the impact a member of parliament can have on their local community. The Year 10 students were engaged, and asked many interesting questions, which Ms Hammond answered confidently and kindly. It was a great experience and opportunity for our Year 10 students.

Year 10 Barista Course

Last Tuesday and Wednesday, Year 10 EDGE students participated in a Barista course at Fremantle Baristas. The course began with a lesson on coffee beans and roasting, before learning how to use the coffee machines. After a morning tea and coffee break, students were shown how to produce the perfect extraction before learning to text milk and achieve the perfect microfoam. Students then had ample time to make cappuccinos, lattes, flat whites, and long macchiatos, even attempting some latte art! Our students quickly picked up the skills needed to make a great cup of coffee. Students will have an opportunity to practice their skills back at school in the Newman Café next year!

Philosophy and Ethics at Newman College

Students in our Ethics course had the opportunity to enrich their reasoning skills in two challenging events this term. Firstly, students attended a first-year Philosophy lecture at UWA where they grappled with the question: “What is the mind?” This excursion prepared two teams very well for the online Ethics Olympiad competition which was held Monday 8th November.

The Ethics Olympiad is a competitive and collaborative event in which students analyse and discuss real-life, timely, and ethical issues.  It differs from a debate in that students are not assigned opposing views; rather, they defend whatever position they believe is right and win by showing that they have thought more carefully, deeply, and perceptively about the cases in question.

The two teams included the following students: Emily Peou, Zoe Boss and Sean Bolten and Charlotte Laurent, Angelica Rombouts and Ariana Mason. Students were challenged two four heats where they were required to analyse two case studies, respond to ethical questions and present their view to an opposing team. Students competed against several other WA schools, and two schools from Hong Kong. These students should be commended for their ability to reason and present their viewpoints in articulate and thoughtful ways.

Year 11 Feedback Days

The Year 11 Semester Two exams finish today, and feedback sessions will begin on Monday. The timetable for Feedback Sessions can be found here. It is compulsory for students to attend their Feedback sessions and are required to wear their summer uniform. These sessions give students an opportunity to go through the exam with their teacher and discuss exam technique and preparation.

Year 7 – 11 Awards Assembly

The College will celebrate the achievements of our students in Years 7 – 11 at the awards assembly being held on Thursday 25 November in the Marcellin Gymnasium commencing at 8.45am.  Students are required to wear their Summer Uniform. The assembly will be recorded and streamed live. Please Click Here to access the link which will be live at 8.45am.
Parents of award winners will be notified early next week.

Year 10 River Cruise

The Year 10 River Cruise will be held on Monday 22 November. The River Cruise departs the Barrack Street Jetty at 6:30pm and will return by 9:30pm. Students are asked to have dinner before they arrive as no food will be available on the boat. Students are looking forward to a fantastic night of dancing and costumes. The dress theme for the evening is Popular Culture Icons. Students can choose to wear themed attire or smart casual clothes. The River Cruise is always a highlight of the year and will be a wonderful celebration of the growth and achievements of this cohort.

Pastoral Care Group

To provide students with consistent, predictable routines at the commencement of each day we will be moving Pastoral Care Group (PCG) to the beginning of the day. PCG class is critically important for relationship building, delivery of important messages and wellbeing programs, and for reiterating whole of school expectations in relation to our Newman College Norms.   This change has occurred after feedback from both students and staff on the effectiveness of the PCG classes in relation to the intent of the program. Period times for 2022 are listed below.

Problem Based Learning: Future Creators and Challenge Accepted

During Week 9, students in Years 7 – 9 will participate a week-long problem-based learning challenge. Year 9 and 10 students who participated in the Problem Based Learning Immersion in the July holidays have been busy co-constructing the program for their peers. Students in Years 7 and 8 will work together in small groups and Year 9 students will work together.

Guided by staff, students will work collaboratively to create dynamic solutions to real-world problems. The week will culminate in a grand final assembly where students will present their solutions and their efforts will be celebrated.

This learning initiative reflects Newman College’s Vision for Learning ‘Shine through discovery’ – Let you light shine – and is focused on providing students with a range of enriching learning experiences. Students are permitted to wear their Sports uniform on Monday and Wednesday and their Guild Uniform on Tuesday. Students are required to wear their Summer Uniform on Thursday for the grand final assembly and Advent Liturgy.

For the week to be an enjoyable success and celebration of 2021, it is important that students see the significance of maintaining high standards of attendance, engagement and respect during Week 9, as it is at all other points in the academic year, and I sincerely appreciate your support in ensuring students in Years 7 – 9 finish the year on an exemplary note.

Newman News Term 4 Week 6: From the Leader of Primary

As we begin to move towards the end of the school year, it Is very easy to start thinking about the year ahead.  However, we are still very much focused on helping all of our students to finish the school year well, and enter the summer break feeling good about their accomplishments across the year.

Next Friday, we will be holding a transition afternoon for the first time for all of our students from Kindy to Year 5. Students will be informed of their class and teacher for next year, and then given a chance to spend some time in the afternoon with their new teacher and classmates in their new classroom. This will give students a chance to experience their new environment for 2022, as well as begin to build a relationship with their teacher. We are looking forward to the afternoon, and I’m sure it will be well received by students too.

Remembrance Day

Last Thursday, 11 November, students gathered together to take part in a commemoration of Remembrance Day. This is a special day where we remember the sacrifice of soldiers everywhere who have died in conflicts across the world, but especially World War I. Students from Year 6 led our ceremony, reading the poem In Flanders Fields, and reciting the Ode of Remembrance. I would like to thank all those students who took part in our commemoration showing reverence and respect, and especially to our Year 6 students for leading the ceremony for us all.

Lavalla Remembrance Day 2021

Leadership Retreat

Last Friday, Year 5 students gathered in the hall to take part in their Leadership retreat. I must say, I have been quite impressed with the thoughtful, and mature approach our Year Five students have taken to the leadership process, and I know many students agonised long and hard over their leadership letters. Students had a great time at the retreat, balancing a mix of the leadership qualities we might see in superheroes, as well as recognising how the Fruits of the Holy Spirit can be drawn upon to demonstrate Christ centred leadership. Students will be presenting their speeches next week, and we will announce our student leaders for 2022 shortly thereafter.

Lavalla Leadership Retreat Y6 2021

Touch Rugby Carnival

Last week several our Year 6 students, accompanied by supercoaches Mrs Richards and Mrs Biancuzzo, took part the IPSHA Touch Rugby Carnival. Students have been practicing hard over a number of weeks and had a great time at the carnival. Mrs Biancuzzo’s team went undefeated, while Mrs Richards’ team won all but one of their games, so there could be some future champions among our group! Most impressive though, was that the students improved with each game over the day, and the great sportsmanship and spirit of competition the students showed on the day. We are always very proud to hear of moments when our students represent our College so well.

Year 3 Fire & Emergency Services Incursion

Last Friday, our Year 3 students were very lucky to have a visit from Mr Kelly Wyeth (Dad of Billie (Y3) and Austin (Y6)) who came with his team of Fire and Emergency Services personnel to talk with students about fire and fire safety. Year 3 students have been learning about heat transfer as part of their science program, and the different ways heat can move in and around objects. Mr Wyeth presented on some of the ways fire can move and spoke to students about some of the technology emergency services use to track fires, and how they can move so quickly through the environment. Fortunately for students, Mr Wyeth was able to bring the fire truck too meaning students were really able to gets hands on with their learning. We owe a big thanks to Mr Wyeth and his team for giving up their time, and helping to create a very real and authentic learning experience for our students.

Transition Day

In our continuing efforts to cater to our student wellbeing needs and provide a settled transition into the new school year, we will be holding a transition session for all students in Kindy – Year 5 on Friday 26 November.

All students in Kindy to Year 5 will be informed who their 2022 classroom teacher will be, and they will then spend time in their new classroom, meeting with their teacher. This will provide students with an opportunity to ask questions about the 2022 school year and begin the important connection with their new teacher and classmates.

Class lists will be sent to families at 3.30pm on Friday 26 November. Please note that no changes to class lists will be possible. Families have been invited to contact myself, or their child’s current classroom teacher if they had any concerns regarding 2022 classroom placement. Additionally, all children have been asked who their friends at school are, and we have ensured that at least one of these named friends will be in each child’s 2022 classroom.

We will also welcome all our Year 2 students on this day where they will enjoy a day of orientation at the Lavalla campus. If you see any of our younger students please join us in making them feel welcome with a friendly smile or wave hello.

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory Production Rehearsals

Last week several students across our campus began preparing for the College production for 2022 – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. You can have a read of their experiences below.

Hi! We are the Year 4 oompaloompas from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and we are here to tell you about the rehearsal day we had in the auditorium. It was a great day. We all got to see what everyone from the camp had been working on. After watching some songs we got called out to get our lunch which was Chicken Treat. Then we went up to the steps and ate our lunch – it was delicious! We all had an icy pole too and then ended up creating a circle and going in to do tricks and dancing. After that we went and joined the rehearsals. We ran through about six songs, and when we weren’t performing our songs, we could watch the others. It was so cool to see what everyone was working and everything has been going really good so far. All of us are very excited and we had an incredible day.

Berkley, Mila, and Avia – Year 4

My favourite part of the camp day was having the opportunity to practice on stage. It made me feel very excited and happy and also very grateful that we had been chosen. Being in the auditorium was a great experience because we got to see all the other members of the cast and we realised that Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was alive! We can’t wait for the performance day next year and would like to thank all the staff who work so hard to direct and encourage us.

Elise – Year 4

Swimming Lessons

This week we commenced the first of our two weeks of swimming lessons. I think the combination of the warmer weather and refreshing water has meant many students have thoroughly enjoyed their time in the pool this week. We have spoken as a campus about the importance of listening to our swim teachers, and expressing our thanks to them at the end of each lesson which students have been doing. Let’s keep this up! Students have also done quite well with lost property! If your child is missing a towel, sock, or goggles please check the undercover area, or you can check in with Mrs Johnson in the office.

Newman Junior Netball

It was very pleasing to hear recently of the success of one our Newman Junior Netball teams! The Year 5 Sapphires team recently won the premiership for Division One, beating a number of other teams along the way in what was a very successful season. It was a wonderful achievement for the girls. Congratulations to Agustina, Lucy, Sienna, Annabelle, Savannah, Livia, Emersyn, and Layla on their success

Swimming lessons

Our Year 1 and 2 students have had a wonderful start to swimming lessons in our College Pool. I congratulate all these students on the efforts and energy, in not only their lessons, but in also their self-organisational skills.

Assembly – 1Blue

Thank you to Mrs Day and our 1 Blue student’s who performed a wonderful assembly and showed us the learning that they have been undertaking in their classroom. Their rendition of “Rock around the Clock” was a personal favourite, as well as demonstrating the great mathematical learning they have been undertaking.

Liturgy – St Cecilia’s Feast Day

Yesterday, Father Kaz and our Year 1 students led us through a liturgy to celebrate the Feast Day of St Cecilia. Father Kaz shared with us that the lesson we can take from St Cecilia’s is how she loved God, shared that love with others and showed bravery. As the patron saint of music, our students certainly rose to the occasion with their beautiful singing and liturgical dance.

On Monday, we welcomed our 2022 Kindergarten students to the College. There were lots of excited and eager faces, as they met their kindy teachers and explored their kindergarten classroom.
Thank you to the many mums and dads (and some grandparents) who joined us for the information session and morning tea. We look forward to a long journey together ahead.

New Kindy T-shirt and Bag

Earlier this term, I put the call out to our current kindergarten students and challenged them to design a picture that could be used on our new Kindergarten T-shirts from 2022. I am pleased to announce that Sofia Tassone from Kindy Green was the winner, amongst a tough field of fabulous designs.

Advent

The season of Advent arrives Sunday 28 November following the Feast of Christ the King this week. The Feast of Christ the King invites us to let Christ become King of our hearts and minds. This means letting hope, joy, peace and love found in Christ, rule our heart. At Newman College, we encourage this in our community through our Vision for Mission to form “Good Christians and Good Citizens”.

Year 5 Altar Ministers

Our Year 5 Students were invited to consider the call to be Altar Ministers and 10 students responded and underwent training with Mrs Short and I over the past few weeks. They were recently commissioned at our Thursday morning Community Mass by Fr Christian Iridi. Congratulations to all the students and the families who supported them in this call to serve the community and their parish.

Caritas Australia Student Panel Discussion

Our College was invited to participate in the Caritas Australia Student Panel Discussion. This was an opportunity for our students to discuss with other students from around Australia about different initiatives relating to social justice and share their dreams for a better future for the most vulnerable in our community. Four Year 10 students participated in the discussion and were outstanding in articulating their hopes for our school and how we can continue to support and raise awareness for those who struggle in our community.

Marist Association of St Marcellin Champagnat

The Marist Association of St Marcellin Champagnat met for the final time in 2021 at St Joseph’s Subiaco Parish. This group involves a number of people who are staff, ex staff or ex students who seek to maintain a connection and receive formation within the Marist Tradition. 25 people gathered as Marist Br Tony Leon, facilitated a reflection “Marist Dreaming” on the Marist mission and gave staff an opportunity to reflect on their relationship with God and the importance of living their faith within their community. The Marist Association is an important part of our formation program for staff as they seek to live out an authentic Christian witness to students in our community.

Newman News Term 4 Week 6: From the Vice Principal

This is the second last newsletter for the 2021 year. Our final newsletter will be published during Week 9 of Term 4.  The next few weeks will be busy for staff, students, and families alike as we embrace the activities that the end of year inevitably brings. We are finalising our student leaders in the Primary school, welcoming our new community members into the Newman family with our Kindergarten Orientation and Year 7 Transition Workshops this week. We would love for you to save the date for our PK-12 Christmas Carols evening on December the 8, hosted by our Primary students.

As you would be aware from the Principal’s announcement in the last edition of the newsletter, our Marian campus relocation and our new Primary school build will be occurring over the next two years. From 2022, we have appointed a Deputy Principal Primary, Mrs Lisa McClue. Lisa will exercise leadership of the PK to Year 6 Primary school. Ms Katya Anderson, Leader of Learning, will oversee the Teaching and Learning of the Primary school. Mr Stuart McClorey, Leader of Wellbeing, will oversee Wellbeing in the Primary school.

It is an exciting time for Newman College and this final amalgamation of our Marist school on to one campus is nearly fifty years in the making. The transitionary stage over the next two years presents as a perfect opportunity for the College to conduct alignment audits to ensure our learning, wellbeing, uniform, booklists, Guilds, technology, leadership structures, policies and internal processes and practices are consistent and appropriately sequenced from PK to Year 12. We look forward to engaging our parent and student community in discussions next year, to glean your insight into our historical practices and to honour and leverage our heritage as we move forward into this new space.

Bathers and Rash Vests – Non-negotiable changes

The College is introducing new College bathers and rash vests next year 2022, which will be available for purchase in January.  In keeping with College uniform expectations, students are required to adhere to the following changes relating to College bathers and rash shirts.

  • Years 1-2 – No change.  Students continue to wear their own personal bathers and rash vests.
  • Years 3-6 (2021) – College bathers and rash vests are compulsory.
  • Years 3-9 (2022) – College bathers and rash vests will be compulsory.

Students may wear the older version of the College bathers and rash vests during 2022, as a transition year.  Otherwise new bathers and rash shirt must be purchased.

  • Years 3-10 (2023) – New style College bathers and rash vests will be compulsory. No old bathers or rash vests can be worn.

The rationale behind this decision sits with sun safety and consistent, moderate, and protective bather choice for both boys and girls. Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world. Each year almost 2000 Australians die from this almost entirely preventable disease. Our students find it difficult to apply fresh sunscreen on all parts of the body prior to the swimming lessons in HPE during Terms 1 and 4. The rash vest will provide additional protection during the swimming lessons.

Learning Support Audit

Associate Professor Dianne Chambers, a well-respected author, presenter, and lecturer from the University of Notre Dame, conducted an audit this year of our Learning and Education Support structures, processes and policies. We now have her report, and we look forward to planning the enaction of the recommendations as a priority in the near future. The executive summary can be found below. If you are interested in hearing more about the report findings, please contact me directly via lucie.McCrory@newman.wa.edu.au .

Executive Summary

The review of learning and education support at Newman College was undertaken as part of a regular review of processes and provisions offered at the school to support students with additional needs and disabilities. The remit for the researcher was to gather data by way of interviews with key stakeholders (leadership, teachers), examination of documents (policy, job descriptions and planning formats) and through focus group interviews (parents and students). These data were collected over the period of one month and provided an overview of the learning and education support services offered at Newman College and the perception of these services by key stakeholders.

The results from analysing the data are presented in aggregated form to ensure any one individual was not identified, although most who provided information were not concerned about their voices being heard (and welcomed this approach). The results indicated that there were many staff at the college who were exemplary in regards to their support of students with additional needs and disabilities, and that these staff should be highly valued by the college and their knowledge shared with all staff.

There were a number of areas identified that could be strengthened including: teacher expectations; planning; behavioural approach; role clarification; funding; communication; and training. Each of these areas are discussed in relation to measures that can be taken to improve processes at the college. There are four main recommendations that the researcher suggests are most critical for the college to consider. These are:

  1. Clarification of roles in the diversity team and employment of additional learning support personnel.
  2. Examination of behavioural expectations and consequences, including development of strategies to address anxiety across the college.
  3. Provide additional training for teachers in providing reasonable adjustments in the classroom.
  4. Communicate any changes/directions in the college clearly to parents.

It is hoped that these recommendations will assist the college in strengthening its use of evidence-based practices to support students with disabilities across all campuses and to ensure consistency in approaches taken.

Code of Conduct

The Keeping Safe Child Protection curriculum is a program that spans from 3 years up to Year 12.  Our College delivers this curriculum during classroom teaching, and through the Wellbeing Programs and Health curriculum.

As a Catholic community we are committed to educating the whole person. In order to do this, we need to ensure a safe, supportive and engaging environment. The basis for this environment is that all in the community model what healthy, respectful relationships look like. The Code of Conduct is the definitive guide to the behaviours we want to model to, and expect from, our children and young people. We want to create a culture that assists our children and young people on their learning journey. We can only achieve such a culture in partnership with all who participate in our community. The Keeping Safe Child Protection curriculum is a program that spans from 3 years up to Year 12.  Our College delivers this curriculum during classroom teaching, and through the Wellbeing Programs and Health curriculum.

A reminder to all families that the Code of Conduct can be accessed via the College website. The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers.

Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. As always, if students ever need support, they are encouraged to contact their Leader of Wellbeing, a College psychologist, Counsellor or classroom teacher.

The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensure confidentiality and accountability and supports professional boundaries. Events held during school hours, and those College associated events outside of school hours are also supported by the Code of Conduct. Additionally, postings on social media platforms that identify the College or College events are bound by the Code of Conduct. We thank you in advance for your understanding and look forward to a positive partnership that supports our students, your children.
