Pathways at Newman College

In recent years there has been positive changes to the options available to students in Years 10, 11 and 12. The purpose of this booklet is to provide a summary of the different pathways available in the senior years of secondary schooling, and to inform students, staff and families of the various processes undertaken at Newman College to ensure the best outcomes for all our students.

Choosing and Changing School Subjects

Here you will find information about Year 8-10 electives, Year 11 and 12 subjects, prerequisites, changing subjects, and achieving secondary graduation.

Workplace Learning

Work Experience allows Year 11 and 12 General students to undertake a work placement in an industry/company of their choice. Students usually spend 1 school day per week at their work placement. There are many benefits associated with Work Experience. Students develop confidence, important work skills, maturity, and valuable networks with employers in their chosen industry. For every placement completed, students will also receive credit towards their WACE (secondary graduation).

Please note that additional fees and charges apply for participation in Work Experience.

Vet Certificates for School Students

Students at Newman College have the opportunity to study a Certificate qualification at a TAFE / training provider, whilst also completing their secondary education in Year 11 and 12.

Typically, students go to the TAFE / training provider one day per week to undertake their studies, and return to school for the remaining four days per week.

Many Certificate qualifications require work experience, and this is usually completed during school holidays and/or examination periods.

UniReady and UniPath Programs

The UniReady and UniPath Programs are both university enabling programs, providing a pathway for non-ATAR students into selected degrees at various universities. Enabling programs are normally accessed by students after they finish their Year 12 studies, however, Newman College has entered into partnerships with two universities that will allow Year 12 students to undertake their enabling programs whilst still enrolled in school.

UniReady and UniPath are different programs, with different models of learning and different university entry outcomes. Please refer to the information booklets below for further details on UniReady and UniPath.
