AFL Girls Dockers Cup

In Weeks 4 and 5 of this term, students from Years 5 – 9 participated in the 2018 AFL Girls Dockers Cup held at City Beach Oval.

Years 5 & 6

This year we had two teams entered in the Years 5 & 6 Dockers Cup. The girls played impeccably well and went down in the Grand Final to Iona by five points. Congratulations to Madeline Peou who was awarded woman of the match for the Grand Final. Thank you to Mrs Lisa Webb for assisting me with coaching the girls and thank you to the Year 10 Newman College students who umpired on the day.

Erica Horn, PE Teacher

Years 7, 8/9

Trials for the tournament started weeks ago, with Newman entering a Year 7 team and a combined Year 8 and 9 team. A big thank you to every student who came along to trials. Unfortunately with limited places we had to leave some great players behind, however this is an awesome testament to women’s AFL.

The Year 7 girls had a great day on the field , with the girls constantly showing enthusiasm and school pride throughout the day. The team finished with one win and two losses, but it is safe to say the future of women’s AFL at Newman College is very bright. A big congratulations to Matilda Simpson who was awarded Year 7 Player of the Carnival, and thank you to Mr Nathan Wear for his coaching expertise on the day.

Year 9 Specialist AFL classes have been putting in some hard work this year and this showed ithroughout the tournament. Under the coaching of Mrs Webb, the Years 8/9 team showed courage, determination and a lot of skill, finishing the day undefeated. Unfortunately so did five other schools, resulting in Newman narrowly missing out making the Grand Final on percentage. Sportsmanship is the word that comes to mind as Newman offered a struggling Perth Modern team four of our own players in the final game. We may not have won the tournament but the spirit showed by our players was amazing! A big thank you to Mrs Lisa Webb who coordinated the trials and training sessions in the lead up to this competition. Congratulations to Charlotte Adams (Year 9) who received Player of the Carnival.

A big thank you to the Year 10 specialised Girls AFL class who umpired the tournament. It was great to see your skills learnt in class applied in the real world. Great work.
