Artist in Residence – Newman College Arts Festival

The Newman College Arts Festival program has been in full swing over the last couple of weeks with some truly wonderful inspirational and enriching arts experiences being facilitated by our 2018 Artist in Residence, Mr Andy Quilty.

Andy Quilty is a prominent Australian artist, currently a finalist in the Black Swan Portraiture Prize, and also a lecturer in Fine Arts at UWA. As a part of the College’s new look Arts Festival this year, Andy conducted several drawing workshops across our Newman College community, working to share his experimental drawing techniques in practical workshops with our Years 2,5,6,10,11 and Year 12 students. He also presented his inspiring approach to drawing to an appreciative workshop of parents and friends from the Newman College community.

Andy’s artwork will be on display, for auction and sale at the Newman College Art Show of student work from Wednesday 10 – Friday 12 October. Andy will also unveil, at the Parents of Newman Soiree (Friday 12 October) a portrait he has been working on, commissioned by the College on behalf of our College community.

Newman College Student Art Show – Wednesday 10 October

The student artwork inspired by Andy will be showcased at the exhibition on Wednesday 10 October along with a multitude of 2D and 3D artworks produced by students from across all three campuses (this includes Technology Materials and Design projects). The showcase will also feature the presentation of awards and Performance Art by Years 9 and 10 Drama students and an array of musical items from Music students in the Music programs at Lavalla and Marcellin campuses. In short, there are many artistic gifts to be celebrated at this year’s festival!

Craft activities will be available on the evening for our budding younger artists as we invite our extended families and younger siblings to join in on the Arts Festival celebration, helping to create an Art installation centered around our 2018 Marist Theme of “Hope”. Families can also enjoy a sausage sizzle for a gold coin donation.

We look forward to celebrating the Arts with you at the Newman College Arts Festival for 2018.
