Newman News Term 3 Week 10: From the Vice Principal

The end of every term gives students and families an opportunity to reflect on their achievements, effort and contribution to the College. School success is aligned to a sense of belonging and purpose which can be enhanced by getting involved in the many activities available at the College. Fitness Fridays at Marian and Workout Wednesday at Lavalla are wonderful ways to develop friendships and build on existing relationships. I sincerely thank the Year 12 students for their leadership and commitment to the many opportunities available to students on the Marcellin Campus and encourage all students to be involved.

Congratulations to the Class of 2019

This week, we farewelled the students of the Graduating Class of 2019. Congratulations to each student and to their families and teachers for their persistence, diligence and resilience; not only over the course of their final year, but over the course of their schooling. I ask the College Community to keep all Year 12 students in their prayers as they prepare for exams, await their final results and evaluate their post school options and pathways. I also acknowledge the love, care and concern afforded to each student by Mrs Rebecca Bramanto, Leader of Wellbeing Year 12. Mrs Bramanto’s commitment and presence to each student typifies our Marist charism and mission in our quest to form and educate young people.

Communication Platforms- Code of Conduct

Primary families are reminded that any feedback regarding learning and teaching, should be directed to the classroom teacher via email, phone or by meeting. Seesaw is not the platform used to communicate with, engage with and collaborate with teachers. Seesaw is designed to showcase student learning and work samples.

Similarly, Secondary families are asked to communicate with teachers via email, and not their child’s SEQTA portal.

A reminder to all families that the Code of Conduct can be accessed via the College website. The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the Code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers.

The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensuring confidentiality and accountability and supports professional boundaries. Events held during school hours AND outside of school hours that are associated with the College are also supported by the Code of Conduct. Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with any member of the Senior Leadership Team. We thank you in advance for your understanding and support of how we strive to partner positively with one another.

ACC A Division competition is at the elite level. Congratulations to all students for backing yourselves in and performing with determination and pride. We were only three points off 4th and 33 points off 3rd. We now know we can match it with the best and look forward to the challenge of further improvement in 2020.

It has taken a lot of work to get to this point and recognition must go to all of the staff and coaches who have put a great deal of time and energy into best preparing our teams.

Marist Football

In the space of a week, Marist 18’s celebrated Grand Final victory in the Northern Conference and a District State Premiership.

True grit, skill and courage has seen the Marist 18’s take out two grand finals in a week, with Newman College students making up almost half of the playing group.

The team was coached by Matt Angus, who recently guided Newman’s 1st XVIII to grand final victory, and last year coached the 2018 Marist Year 11/12 team that took out the premiership.

The Marist 18’s arguably saved their best game for their premiership push against Quinns Bulls at Claremont Oval on Sunday 15 September, displaying high quality skills and tough team orientated play.

Marist defeated Quinns Bulls 10.5-65 to 2.6-18. Four out of the six best players are Newman students. The best players are as follows : J. Van Rooyen, J.Ciminata, A. Aves (Newman), E. McCallum (Newman), M. Romano (Newman), J. Walsh-Dwyer (Newman).

In a first, the team played a second grand final against fellow District winner Morley Bulldogs to determine the State District title. Both teams were extremely competitive but, despite only playing a week earlier, Marist dominated 10.9-69 to 4.6-30.

Newman Knights

The Newman Knights Hockey Club wound up their 2019 season in the best possible way with a thrilling Grand Final win for the J11/12 Boys last Friday.

Having taken out the Minor Premiership with only one loss all season to opponents Southern River, the game was locked at 1-1 after extra time. Penalty strokes decided the outcome with all five boys converting to win the game 6-5. Goal scorers were Connor Whelan, Tom Ariti, Morgan Keet, Max Hinch and Dominick Elliot.

All teams had lots of fun and showed great sportsmanship throughout a very busy season. The Mini Knights had 65 participants in 2019 ranging in age from Pre Primary – Year 4, and we held Hookin2hockey sessions in Terms 1 & 2 at Newman College and Term 3 at St Dominics, Innaloo, with each program running for 6 weeks.

The J1/2’s to J11/12’s had 115 participants with teams in each age group, some playing together for the first time. Boys and girls play together in the younger age groups and we also had two mixed teams in both J5/6 and J7/8 age groups, as well as a J5/6 girls, J9/10 boys and the two J11/12 teams. Several teams had new players who joined in 2019 and our existing players quickly embraced these players to their team providing support and encouragement at every game.

Following their back to back B Grade Premiership wins in 2017 & 2018, our J11/12 Girls played in the higher Promotion A grade, which was a tough competition. Most of the girls also played in Senior teams all year with seven of the girls in Year 12 – their last year as Juniors. We also saw several of our J11/12 Boys playing Senior hockey with Tom Ariti ending the season as Runner Up Fairest and Best in our Men’s Promotion 1 team.

Congratulations to all our players, coaches, umpires and managers on a great season. 2020 will see us expand our six week Mini Knights program to include students in Years 5 & 6 wanting to try hockey for the first time before joining a team. The first Mini Knights will be in Term 1, 2020 at Newman College, kicking off with a come and try clinic on 10th Feb!

Humanities Tour / Arts Tour

Over the Term 2 break, we saw two College tours take place; the Humanities Tour visited Sydney & Canberra while the Arts Tour visited New York. Reports from staff and students have been hugely positive and I know our students have taken away some great memories from their time away. I was also very pleased to receive feedback from members of the public about our students on these tours. Our students were complimented on the way they conducted themselves in public areas and the manner in which they carried themselves. While it is always nice to receive such positive feedback as a school, these comments really compliment the families in our community and the children they are raising.

R U OK? Day Activities

Thursday 12 September was R U OK? Day – a day when we’re reminded to ask, “Are you OK?” and to remember every day of the year to support people who may be struggling with life’s ups and downs. At Newman College, we know that regular meaningful conversations can make a difference. You do not have to be an expert to ask how someone is going. This year in the build-up to R U OK? day we were shining a light on the times we should be asking our friends and loved ones this important question. We want everyone in our school community to know that if something is up with someone you know, if something is going on in their life or you notice a change in what they’re doing or saying, it’s time to trust that gut instinct and ask them “Are you OK?”

To spread this message, students on the Marcellin Campus were invited to wear yellow accessories on the day to show their support. They also enjoyed yellow cupcakes, a sausage sizzle and a variety of games at lunchtime.

Girls in STEM Day

On Friday 6 September, a group of Year 9 girls were selected to attend the annual Girls in STEM event at North Metropolitan TAFE which promotes and encourages opportunities for girls in STEM. Click here to read more and see more photos from the day.

Counselling & Wellbeing Team

In Weeks 5 and 6, the Counselling Team ran sessions for parents in the primary school on Growth Mindset. The mindset of students of all ages can have a significant impact on their academic engagement and achievement as well as their wellbeing. Students who believe that they can improve are more likely to put in effort and persist when faced with challenges, leading to higher achievement and improved self-efficacy. The below links have helpful information regarding how to develop a growth mindset as well as what language to use to help promote this.
