Newman Newbies: From the Deputy Principal Wellbeing Secondary

Humanities Tour / Arts Tour

Over the Term 2 break, we saw two College tours take place; the Humanities Tour visited Sydney & Canberra while the Arts Tour visited New York. Reports from staff and students have been hugely positive and I know our students have taken away some great memories from their time away. I was also very pleased to receive feedback from members of the public about our students on these tours. Our students were complimented on the way they conducted themselves in public areas and the manner in which they carried themselves. While it is always nice to receive such positive feedback as a school, these comments really compliment the families in our community and the children they are raising.

Year 12 Human Biology Excursion

This term, the Year 12 Human Biology class visited the Harry Perkins Institute. Students worked in the lab, where they set up and ran biotechnological processes to better understand how mutations can be identified. Click here to read more and see more photos from the day.

Science Week

In Weeks 3 and 4, Newman College was proud to be involved in celebrating National Science Week! Kicking off with a literal bang, all students from Kindy – Year 12 were treated to a spectacular rockets and explosions Science Show put on by Science Teachers Mr Spriggins and Mr Shuckstes.

The festivities continued, with students participating in a giant bubble-making challenge, a paper plane throwing challenge, a science-themed Kahoot competition and a wildlife show from WestOz Wildlife. Newman College was also fortunate enough to feature on Perth’s Channel 9’s Today Show, showcasing what’s on offer in Science in our Secondary School. Click here to see the Channel 9 live cross.

R U OK? Day Activities

Thursday 12 September was R U OK? Day – a day when we’re reminded to ask, “Are you OK?” and to remember every day of the year to support people who may be struggling with life’s ups and downs. At Newman College, we know that regular meaningful conversations can make a difference. You do not have to be an expert to ask how someone is going. This year in the build-up to R U OK? day we were shining a light on the times we should be asking our friends and loved ones this important question. We want everyone in our school community to know that if something is up with someone you know, if something is going on in their life or you notice a change in what they’re doing or saying, it’s time to trust that gut instinct and ask them “Are you OK?”

To spread this message, students on the Marcellin Campus were invited to wear yellow accessories on the day to show their support. They also enjoyed yellow cupcakes, a sausage sizzle and a variety of games at lunchtime.

Girls in STEM Day

On Friday 6 September, a group of Year 9 girls were selected to attend the annual Girls in STEM event at North Metropolitan TAFE which promotes and encourages opportunities for girls in STEM. Click here to read more and see more photos from the day.
