A catholic school educating in the marist tradition
The Australian Marist Netball Carnival is the coming together of students, staff and other people associated with schools from around Australia who have been influenced by the charism of St Marcellin Champagnat.
The carnival is hosted by a different school each year, giving students an opportunity to visit a variety of metropolitan and regional areas around the country. Competition of a high standard is played over three days. The girls participate in great spirits and make lifelong friendships Australia-wide.
At the conclusion of the carnival, the Marist Netball Team has an opportunity to explore the sights surrounding the host school. The 2019 carnival is being hosted by Alice Springs, giving our students an opportunity to discover Uluru and Indigenous culture.
The Marist Basketball Carnival is yet another celebration of the strength of the Marist network across Australia. Over the course of the Carnival, students from Newman College compete against basketball teams from across the country. Sharing experiences opens our students eyes to life outside of our College, but also fosters an understanding of the broader Marist community of which they are a part.
The competition is very strong, with the destination of the tour changing each year. We encourage participation in the Marist Basketball Carnival for students Y9 – Y12.
Each year in December the Newman College 1ST XI Cricket team participates in the Marist Cricket Carnival. Started 50 years ago, there are now 3 carnivals held concurrently around Australia with 20 Marist school competing. Schools come from all mainland states plus one from Auckland, New Zealand.
This a fantastic opportunity to not only play in a top class competition but enjoy all that a tour interstate brings.
The Independent Primary School Heads of Australia (IPSHA) conduct a series of sporting carnivals for students in Years 3-6 with the focus on participation. There are no shields or points awarded. It is about giving students the opportunity to compete against students from other primary schools, promoting fun and enjoyment, encouraging everyone to participate and highlighting the importance of fair play and healthy competition.
The Northern Associated Schools (NAS) competition runs after school in Term 1 (Summer Competition) and Term 2 (Winter Competition) for students in Years 7-12. The primary emphasis of this competition is upon participation. Teams compete against students from John XXIII, Sacred Heart College, Servite College and Chisholm College. Games alternate between home and away.
