Newman News Term 4 Week 2 : From the Principal

I trust Term 4 has commenced well for all families.  Over the last two weeks there have been so many opportunities for our young people across the life of the school.  Our Year 7 cohort for 2022 commenced the term with their Orientation Day with over 210 students in attendance.  Year 10 made their way in blustery conditions to Margaret River for their week-long adventure camp, while our Year 12 cohort finished their mock exams.  In our primary school, we had our buddy day which was a great example of our Marist family.

The most pleasing event was our St John Henry Newman Mass which brought our whole school together. Over the next couple of weeks, we keep in our prayers our senior students as they complete their journey at Newman College.

Consolidation of our PK-12 College

It is with great excitement that I would like to announce the successful completion of an agreement between the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Perth and the Provincial of the Marist Brothers. This agreement will allow for the consolidation of the Early Childhood facilities of the Marian campus onto the Newman College, Churchlands site. This development process will commence in 2022, with an expected completion ahead of the 2024 school year.  Please click here to read more.

Year 12 Graduation

On Wednesday evening we celebrated the Class of 2021 at a ceremony at Optus Stadium, with 720 people in attendance.  It was a magnificent occasion, commencing with Mass and followed by the formal Graduation presentation.

The cohort’s motto, #togetherasonein21, has held true throughout the year.  Our Year 12 students, as individuals and as a collective, have conducted themselves in a commendable manner and have exemplified our College’s Vision for Learning ‘Shine through Discovery’ – let your light shine (Matthew 5:16).

In my speech I spoke of the last six years of Secondary school for these students and the changes in the world that have occurred, particularly with the advent of Covid-19.  We trust that we have equipped our students with the skills and attitude to navigate the ever-changing world into which they are about to embark.  To view my speech in full, please click here.

St John Henry Newman Feast Day

Last Friday we celebrated the Feast of St John Henry Newman with a whole school Mass in the Marcellin Campus Gym.  This was possible as the Year 12 cohort had exams and the Year 10 cohort was away on camp.
It was a wonderful celebration in honour of our College namesake, St John Henry Newman, and of our PK-12 College gathering together as one school.

Arts Festival – Parent Soiree

All parents, current and prospective, are invited to attend the Parent Soiree on Friday 29 October, to be held in the Marist Auditorium.  Please click here for more information and to purchase tickets.

Newman Parents Consultative Committee (NPCC) Meeting – Monday 1 November

The College’s Annual School Improvement Plan for 2021, as shown below, has been completed and rated by the staff.  I will present the results at the upcoming NPCC Meeting.

During December the staff will work on the 2022 Annual School Improvement Plan.

Migrant and Refugee Sunday – 26 September

Migrant and Refugee Sunday is celebrated in Australia on the last Sunday in September. This brings the practice of the Church in Australia into line with the practice of the Church around the world.
The 2021 Theme is ‘Towards An Ever Wider We’.  It calls all of us to consider our place in the world and the responsibility we have to support marginalised and dislocated people.  As part of our College Ministry focus, we support refugees and asylum seekers through our Alms giving.  In addition, our advocacy of support, is exemplified by Pope Francis’ words, of ‘widening the tent to embrace everyone’ who is in need.  You can read Pope Francis’ Message for the World Day of Migrants and Refugees 2021 here.

Celebrating St John Henry Newman Feast Day

Families would have received a letter this week regarding the celebration of the Feast of St John Henry Newman which is celebrated on Saturday 9 October. To mark the significance of this occasion, our K-12 Community will come together for a combined Mass in the Marcelin Sports Complex on Friday 15 October.  Further details are included in the letter to families and in the update from Ministry, Outreach and Advocacy here.

Year 12 2021

On Thursday we celebrated the final day of formal education for our Year 12 students with a Principal’s Assembly and other dedicated activities.  In my speech I reflected on the recent WA Community Cabinet with the Premier, Mark McGowan, his ministers and students from across the seat of Churchlands and Nedlands which included 9 of our students in Years 10 and 11. He said to them, “What you have on offer at your school, you need to take advantage of”.  In his words, he said “Just use it”.

The Premier put to the students in the room, that we are in a privileged position here in WA; not only are we hosting the Grand Final in Perth but by the fact that we can meet, we can celebrate, we can go out, we can be at school and study as if life is normal.  We know that our Eastern States counterparts, and certainly the Year 12 students in Victoria and NSW, have spent the last 3 months at home trying to navigate the end of their educational journey in lockdown. Please click here to view the full speech.

A highlight of the assembly was our Year 6 student leaders and siblings of our graduating class in attendance.  In addition, the Lavalla Primary school students along with the Secondary students formed a guard of honour as the Year 12 students moved from the Gymnasium to the Auditorium.

We now look forward to the formal Year 12 Graduation ceremony in Week 2 of Term 4.

Student Leadership 2022

At Thursday’s assembly we also announced the Leadership Group for 2022.  Congratulations to Isabella O’Rourke and Joshua Downes who have been appointed College Captains and all those students who have been selected for leadership. I look forward to working with you all and am confident that you will let your light shine.

End of Term

Following an event packed term, I wish all staff, students and families a restful and enjoyable Spring break and look forward to welcoming everyone back in Term 4.

Newman News Term 3 Week 10: From the Deputy Principal Secondary

It is hard to believe that the end of Term 3 is here! I am sure that our students and staff are looking forward to a chance to slow down, breathe and rejuvenate ready for Term 4. It has been wonderful to see the growth in student learning as they challenge themselves and take on new opportunities. It is a privilege to come to school each day and see students striving for excellence.

I wish our students and family and very happy and restful break, and I look forward to welcoming students back to Term 4 on Tuesday 12 October. A reminder that students wear their Summer Uniform throughout Term 4.

Highlights from the Past Two Weeks

Year 12 Last Week

Week 10 was the final week of school for our Year 12 cohort. Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of activities such as a disco, capture the flag game, scavenger hunt and the traditional water slide on Thursday morning.

We said goodbye to our Year 12 students at the Principal’s Assembly on Thursday. Mr Phil Walleystack joined us and spoke to the College Community about the experiences that formed him as person. Our students have seen Phil conducting ‘Welcome to Country’ at major College events and at the assembly, we had the opportunity to hear more of his story. Phil’s message to our students and the Class of 2021 was about knowing your own value and taking all opportunities as you never know where they can lead you.

To conclude the assembly, students in Years 3 – 11 created a Guard of Honour across the Marcellin oval for our Year 12 students. It was a very special and moving moment for the Class of 2021.

2022 Student Leadership Team

This year 37 Year 11 students embarked on the Year 11 Leadership Preparation program. Prospective leaders attended a commissioning mass and four afterschool workshops focused on strengths, values, and service.

Students produced written applications, underwent a student and staff vote, shortlisting and interviews. Students nominating for College Captain also presented to members of the Executive and Senior Leadership Teams. The applications and presentations this year were of an extremely high standard and all Year 11 students should be proud of their efforts throughout the program and of their continuing role as leaders in our community.

I am looking forward to seeing these students grow their leadership skills with a strong foundation of faith, strengths and values. I would like to thank Miss Cristina Guzzomi, Leadership Coordinator and Mr Mat Puljiz, Leader of Wellbeing Year 11 for their support and guidance of these students throughout this process.

Congratulations to the 2022 Student Leadership Team!

Year 10 Peer Support

During Week 9 a group of Year 10 students participated in a Peer Support Training Day. These students will play a significant role in the 2022 Year 7 transition and orientation program. Throughout the day, students engaged in sessions on leadership qualities, character strengths and then specifically looked at how they can assist our incoming Year 7 students in settling into high school. Thank you to Miss Gemma Beekink, Leader of Wellbeing Year 10 and Miss Cristina Guzzomi, Leadership Coordinator for organising and facilitating this leadership opportunity for Year 10 students. I am really looking forward to seeing these students lead our 2022 Year 7 students with care, compassion and empathy.

Year 6 & 12 Leadership Breakfast

Our Year 6 and 12 Leadership Teams came together for the final time in Week 9. Students shared in a breakfast and had an opportunity to reflect on their leadership journey throughout 2021. Mr Stuart McClorey, Leader of Primary and myself have really enjoyed working with this exceptional group of students this year and we look forward to building on these formation workshops in 2022.

Charlie & the Chocolate Factory Cast Announcement

ACC Athletics Carnival

Our ACC Athletes performed brilliantly this year, exceeding all expectations by finishing 4th overall in A Division. This is our best result in well over a decade! Full credit goes to everyone for committing to training, displaying mental toughness and delivering their personal best under the pressure of elite competition. We should all be extremely proud of this performance, and we look forward to going one better next year and challenging for a podium finish!

Although it was a whole team effort, recognition must go to;

  • Hannah Seaborn: U13 Age Champion
  • Imogen Boss: U15 Age Champion

Thank you to the PE staff for their assistance and support in best preparing the team and their faultless management and marshalling of athletes on the day. Thanks also to our team of specialist coaches who did a fantastic job throughout the term teaching and motivating our athletes. Special mention to Lisa Webb who was in charge of our relay teams which all competed so superbly in the heat of battle against quality opposition.

Finally, thanks to all parents for their support of the Athletics program as we appreciate it is a very busy time of year.

All the results and a replay of the live stream from the A Division Athletics Carnival are now available on the Internet.

Boys School Sport WA Water Polo Competition

It was a great day at HBF Stadium on Wednesday for the SSWA Water polo championships. Up against quality opposition the team finished 3rd overall out of 14 teams which is a fantastic result. Our ‘play off’ final against Melville Senior High School was a cliff hanger with our best player for the day, Jaxon Chester equalizing with 1 second left on the clock. Harrison Sandford then stepped up when it was counted and scored the winning goal in extra time! Thank you to Oliver from the Newman Water Polo Club for his expert coaching and all players for a great day of competition.

Newman News Term 3 Week 10: From the Leader of Early Childhood

Highlights from Past Two Weeks

After a very busy term, I have no doubt that there will be many little faces that come home this afternoon excited about the two-week break ahead of them. This break is very well-deserved, for not only students but teachers too. It has been wonderful to see the growth in student learning, and the fantastic work that has been produced across each class and learning area. Not forgetting the events such as Book Week, Wellbeing Week, the Primary Athletics Carnival, RU OK Day?, Primary Disco, Excursions, Incursions, TSH Power of Speech Awards, Assumption Buddy Day, and the Lapathon. Wow!! No wonder we have some tired little people.

Throughout all of these events, what has been evident, is the level of dedication that students display to all areas of their development – social, emotional, cognitive and physical. Any teacher I speak to at Marian will attest to the positivity, energy and effort that they see each day in their students. When we strive to have each child “Shine through Discovery” it is fair to say, that it is easy to achieve these moments when children approach each challenge with such a positive attitude.

I look forward to many more moments of celebration in Term 4, and wish all families a very relaxing, safe and enjoyable holiday break.

Pre-Primary Red Assembly

Thank you to Pre-Primary Red students, Mrs Simpson and Mrs Seaborn for all their efforts in preparing last week’s assembly. The children explained their in-class learning about forces of push and pull, including some of the toys they had made this term. They then dazzled us with their dancing skills to the boppy song “I like to move it”.

Primary Disco

With the theme to come dressed as a movie character, it was wonderful to see all the excited faces behind many different costumes as the children arrived for the Primary Disco event last Friday. DJ Rosey was a huge hit and provided lots of games as well as great songs to dance along to.

A big thanks is extended to our Year 11 and Year 12 students who coordinated the decorations and planning for the event. It was a lovely evening of bringing together our community.

Important Information For The Next Two Weeks

Class Allocations 2022

In Term 4, teachers will begin looking at class groupings for 2022. Many factors are considered when selecting class placements for students and each child’s best interests are the main priority when these decisions are made. Class placements are made in consultation with all year level teachers and significant time and consideration is given to this task. Class placement is made with due consideration of gender, pastoral needs, social and emotional needs, special learning needs, and relationships.

If you believe that your child has needs that require consideration, please arrange a meeting to discuss this with their classroom teacher early in Term 4 or contact me via email at lisa.mcclue@newman.wa.edu.au. Parents should be aware that requesting a certain teacher is not a consideration in the class allocation process.

Class allocations will be shared with families towards the end of term 4.  I thank you for your understanding and support.

Kindergarten 2022

Kindergarten 2022 Orientation is scheduled for Monday 15 November from 9.00am.

Thank you to all families who communicated their preference for number of kindergarten attendance days.

These have now been finalised, and letters have been sent to families confirming kindergarten days of attendance.

Newman News Term 3 Week 10: From the Leader of Mission and Catholic Identity

Breathe: The Spirit of Life

As we break for the end of Term 3, our Marist theme, Breathe: the Spirit of Life, is a reminder of what these holidays could look like for many of us. Our Year 12’s will no doubt be feeling the pressure of heading into their first round of exams but should be reminded of the wise words of St Padre Pio “Pray, hope and don’t worry, worry is useless, God is merciful and will hear your prayer”. Through prayer and simply breathing, we can slow down these holidays, take time for family, friends, and ourselves. I will keep in my prayers our Year 12 students who finish formal classes this Term and hope they look back with joy on their time at Newman College.

Remar Graduation

This week our Year 12 Remar students completed their three-year journey of the Marist Youth Ministry Program. The program focused on leadership development, community, service, and prayer. 18 students journeyed together in Remar and the Graduation evening was an opportunity to reflect on where they have come from, how they have grown and how they will move forward.  Students thanked the staff who walked with them over the years, particularly Louise O’Mahony who met with students fortnightly to provide formation. Thank you also to Hannah Parker, Leader of Youth Ministry and Advocacy, who organised the occasion and will be concluding with the Ministry Team at the end of this Term.

This is the final year Remar will be facilitated at Newman College as the Marist Youth Ministry is concluded. However, students can still get involved with the new Marist Youth Ministry initiative, Game Changers. We currently have groups in Year 7, Year 8, Year 10 and Year 11. If your son or daughter is interested in getting involved please let us know.

Game Changers

Year 7 and Year 8 Game Changers students participated in a school clean-up for their final meeting for the term. Students recognised the importance of being part of a sustainable future and reflected on the words of Pope Francis “You are called to care for creation not only as responsible citizens but also as followers of Christ”.

On Friday September 17, our year 10 game changers set off for an overnight retreat up at Ern Halliday, Hillarys. The students were full of energy when they arrived and ready for an exciting day ahead. The leadership retreat focussed on students exploring how they can grow more in their Christian leadership skills by discovering how to live the Marist values of presence, humility, sensitivity, and audacity both individually and with each other.

By exploring pivotal moments in the mission and lives of Jesus in Galilee and Marcellin in La Valla, the students can discover how such moments bring clarity in helping to identify the true meaning and purpose of Christian mission – to be signs of God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. Students will be given opportunities during the camp to explore their own mission and group projects.

Students concluded their retreat on Saturday morning with a mass in the Marcellin campus Chapel, followed by a light morning tea. It was wonderful to have the students’ families come along to mass as well. Thanks to Liam Street, Marist Youth Minister who facilitated the program, Bonnie Keynes, Matthew Box and Hannah Parker who attended and supported the students.

Community Mass

PK-12 Community Mass continues to be celebrated every Thursday morning, commencing at 8.10am. All families, staff and students are welcome. Community Mass will return on Thursday Week 1 Term 4. We look forward to welcoming you to the Champagnat Chapel.

St John Henry Newman Feast Day

Newman College was the first school in Australia named after the great religious thinker and leader of the 19th Century, John Henry Newman. Declared a Saint by Pope Francis in 2019, the Feast Day of St John Henry Newman is celebrated on Saturday 9 October. To mark the significance of this occasion, our K-12 Community will come together in celebration on Friday 15 October. All Students will gather for a combined Mass in the Marcellin Sports Centre.

Information was sent to families earlier this week.

This is another opportunity for our students to gather as a whole College community and live out our faith story as expressed in our Vision for Mission: to form ‘good Christians and Good Citizens’. We look forward to celebrating this very significant event in the life and history of Newman College.

Ministers of Communion

Congratulations to Andrea Acuna, Sonia Bruce, Jack Daley, Joshua Downes, Emily Burgess, Sharya Ferdinandusz, Joseph Martin, Isabella Meyer, Isabella O’Rourke, Aneika Short and Joshua Thomas for their commitment to serving the Newman College community as Ministers of Communion. Students underwent formation training with Br Terry, Campus Minister who used the Archdiocese of Perth Guidelines to prepare students. This responsibility is a response to a call to be a model of faith to the students within the College and within their Parish life.

Perth iStand Conference

Youth Mission Team will be hosting an iStand event these holidays. Click here for further details.

iSTAND Events are for students in year 8-12 (age 14-18 yrs) and are a wonderful opportunity to connect with fellow young people in a welcoming environment while learning more about yourself, others and God.
