Pre Primary – Year 2 Athletics Carnival

Well done to everyone who participated in today’s Pre Primary – Year 2 Athletics Carnival.

The weather provided perfect conditions for a day of running, skipping, agility and relays. We saw a lot of enthusiastic students who displayed tremendous team spirit and sportsmanship throughout the day. It was wonderful seeing the broad smiles, hearing the cheers of encouragement & witnessing plenty of determination by all.

Term 3 Week 10: From the Principal

 

As Term 3 ends we celebrate the remarkable achievements of our students across the College. At our Marcellin Campus Assembly, our Year 12 students were farewelled by the Secondary School. It was a poignant occasion as it called us to consider the relationships that have been at the heart of their Marist schooling experience and, as such, our family spirit. This Marist characteristic is foundational to building a strong vibrant community. It supports our young people to foster good relationships that can be formed, nurtured and celebrated. The challenge for Year 12 students in the weeks ahead will be the realisation that their school life has come to an end. The future is bright, but the journey they take individually will be diverse. Going into the world and making it on your own will be challenging, but all the same rewarding. Our students are ready to leave and embrace the opportunities that await them. We hope that that family spirit, of being in a Marist community, will stay with them in the years ahead. We pray that their memories of Newman College are where they were formed and prepared for their future pathways. We pray for these students as they enter the final stage of their journey with the upcoming exams commencing next week. Year 12 students will conclude in Term 4 Week 2 with their final Mass and Graduation.

Leadership

Our 2019 Leadership Program commenced this term with 57 Year 11 students. The students respectively were magnificent in their commitment and dedication to the program. Our new leaders were acknowledged by the Secondary School at the final assembly at Marcellin Campus. Congratulations to Matthew Guimelli and Courtney Beveridge who have been selected as College Captains and all those students who have been selected for other significant leadership roles:

Staff Movements

Mrs Paola Rich, Leader of Wellbeing Early Childhood, finishes her tenure as a leader in our community at the end of Term 3. Mrs Rich has been an incredible leader in our community for over 20 years. Her authenticity, professionalism and commitment to young people has been exemplary. Our children in early childhood have been so blessed to have Mrs Rich in their lives. As a leader she has been a great mentor and role model to so many teachers. Mrs Rich will go on leave and return to the College in a teaching role in 2020.

PP-Y2 Assembly – Item Year 2 Red

Family and friends are invited to attend the PP-Y2 Assembly on Friday 19 October at 9.00am. Students will receive Merit Certificates for their Academic achievements and the students from Year 2 Red will perform their item.

Year 7 2019 Orientation Day

An Orientation Day will be held at the College on Monday 8 October 2018 for incoming Year 7 students. Students should arrive at the Marist Auditorium by 8.30am. All students enrolled for Year 7 2019 are required to attend as it provides an opportunity for students to become familiar with the Marcellin Campus. The day will conclude at 3.00pm and students will be available for collection from the Marist Auditorium foyer.

Term 3 Week 10: From the Deputy Principal Learning and Staff Development

Celebrating student achievements, contributions and efforts encourages students to grow and be more engaged.

 

At Newman College, ‘celebration’ is the public recognition of our individual and collective success. We celebrate by honoring the accomplishments, achievements and contributions of all members of the College community, encouraging personal growth and discovery. The close of every term brings many moments of success and Term 3 is no exception. We celebrated our skills and talents on the athletics track and field with Inter-school, Guild and Faction Carnivals for all students. Our students in the Arts celebrated their gifts through performance at the following events:

  • The Catholic Arts Festival
  • Year 12 drama and music recitals
  • The Jazz Lounge

Students at the Marian Campus have celebrated their learning by seeing their ideas come to life in the IDEAS Lab.

Students from Lavalla Campus have celebrated each other by showing gratitude and kindness. This week, we celebrated the Graduating Class of 2018. I sincerely thank each student for their contribution to the College community and wish them well as they explore their choices as they move beyond life at Newman College.

As teachers, we strive to foster celebration by committing to:

  • Providing all families and students with opportunities to come together to celebrate with Christ at the centre
  • Acknowledging growth of student learning
  • Instilling a sense of pride in our students by consistently celebrating their wide ranging performance, efforts and contributions
  • Regular community gatherings in celebration of our combined efforts and successes
  • Recognising and celebrating our discoveries and achievements

Staff Movements

We wish Mrs Paola Rich, Mr Peter Hunt, Mrs Carolyn O’Connor and Mrs Nicola Garlick a well-deserved break as they take long service in Term 4.

Mathew Puljiz is taking leave to care for his family. We wish him well and will welcome him back in 2019. Mrs Helen Leahy will lead the Year 9 students in Term 4.

Parent Funded Designated Device Model

Next year Newman College will continue the parent funded, designated device model that commenced in 2016.
All students in Years 3-6 will require an Apple iPad. All students in Years 7-11 will require a Microsoft Surface Pro. Parents will be required to purchase a device for students entering Year 7, current Year 8 and current Year 9 students.

This designated device model will be made available in cooperation with a nominated supplier; providing a discounted educational bundle including a damage resistant cover and enhanced warranty. Details of the bundle and nominated supplier will be made available early in Term 4. 2019 will be the last year for the College funded MacBook program for students in Year 12.

Code of Conduct

A reminder to all families that the Code of Conduct can be accessed via the College website. The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers; and to all forums including social media and email forms of communication. The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensure confidentiality and accountability and support professional boundaries. Events held during school hours AND outside of school hours that are associated with the College are also supported by the Code. Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with any member of the Senior Leadership Team.

All families are reminded that if they have a concern about the education or wellbeing of their child, they should contact the College directly. We are always willing to support families, but school matters must be managed by the College. It is not appropriate to contact other families about concerns you have about their child. Please direct these matters to the classroom teacher, Leaders of Wellbeing or any member of the Senior Leadership Team.

The College recognises the convenience of year group Facebook pages that are moderated by parents. This is an excellent platform for sharing information involving College events and requirements. It is not appropriate to use social media platforms to seek clarity on teaching and learning or to debate College policies. Please refer these matters to your child’s classroom or PCG Teachers, or a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
