Newman News Term 4 Week 2: From the Leader of Primary

I had the great privilege of attending our Year 12 graduation event at Optus Stadium on Wednesday evening, and it was so beautiful to see families, staff, and students gather together to celebrate the achievements and contributions of the Class of 2021. Graduation is one of those special moments that can become a real marker in life, meaning we can sometimes drift through the busyness of life and it is only during the significant moments we pause to reflect on all things, and sometimes even wonder how we got here so quickly.

Our first words, first steps, first day of school, last day of primary school, are all wonderful moments to take stock and reflect on the journey our children (and us as parents) have been on. We are very much looking forward to celebrating the primary graduation of our own students in just a few short weeks, and I’m sure the celebration and emotion in the air during that occasion will match what we saw on Wednesday.

St. John Henry Newman Feast Day

Last week we had the most wonderful opportunity to gather as a whole school community in the Marcellin gymnasium to celebrate the Feast Day of St. John Henry Newman. It was such a beautiful sight to see the oldest and youngest students of our College in the one building, and the rendition of Sub Tuum at the conclusion of mass was one of the best I have heard in my time at Newman College. Following mass, students were able to partner up with their buddies to take part in some wonderful activities centred around designing and creating a square foot garden prototype as part of our STEM Festival.

It was a great day of learning, inspired by St. John Henry’s rich life as a scholar and master of learning, as well as a beautiful day of community. Thank you to all teachers and families for their support on the day, as well as our Leader of Learning, Miss Katya Anderson, for her contributions in organising the day.

Year3 Blue Assembly

This morning we celebrated a wonderful assembly with 3 Blue presenting an amazing ABBA inspired item on the story of the Prodigal Son. It was a very creative way to demonstrate to students the importance of forgiving others, and how God is always there to show love and forgiveness to us.

We also acknowledged our participants and award winners in last term’s ‘Have Sum Fun’ online maths competition, as well as a host of students who have already impressed their teachers this term with merit awards.

With only one term left to, we hope all of our students can continue to work hard and finish strongly in their learning right up until the last day!

Marcellin Award

This week we awarded the Marcellin Award to Billie Wyeth in Year 3. Billie showed great leadership skills and courage when she spoke to our whole school at assembly this morning about her experiences with Dyslexia, and how this has impacted her learning. She shared a video with the school which helped to give students an understanding of dyslexia, and her honest, touching reflections resonated with students across the school. October is the month where we can raise awareness of dyslexia and other related learning disorders.

We congratulate Billie for sharing her personal message with us today, and inspiring her classmates to think of others. You are a very deserving recipient of the Marcellin Award Billie!

New Staff Welcome

This term we welcome Miss Imogen Crostella to our primary staff. Miss Crostella worked on our campus in Term 2 alongside Mrs Fitz, in the 4 Blue classroom, completing her final pre-service teaching placement. Miss Crostella is going to be here this term in place of Mrs Anita Jurat and will work with students in the Learning Support role. Mrs Jurat has unfortunately had to take some time off from school this term as she spends some time recovering from a personal health issue.

We hope that you will join us in keeping Mrs Jurat in our thoughts and prayers, but also welcome Miss Crostella should you see here in and around the school.

Year 5 Student Leadership Workshops

We were so proud today to welcome almost 75 Year 5 students along with their teachers to the first of our leadership workshops for our forthcoming Year 6 leaders. Students have been invited to nominate for a sports captain or student councillor position, and have been invited to attend two workshops, as well as a retreat day as a way to develop their understanding around what it means to lead others. This morning students explored a number of topics including the importance of understanding our values, and how just the littlest moments in life can make the biggest difference. I am very excited about the commitment and desire of our students to affect great change in our community.

Our next leadership workshop takes place at 8.00am next Friday in the library.

Year 5 Family Life Incursion

This week, students from Year 5 gathered separately as boys and girls to attend an incursion from the Catholic Marriage & Fertility Services who presented the workshop, ‘I am Nature’s Greatest Miracle’. This presentation gives students a gentle introduction to puberty which is an important part of being human. Students were encouraged to embrace their uniqueness and to appreciate the great gifts God has given us by keeping their bodies and minds healthy. All students were also encouraged to speak to their parents about the presentation, and to listen to their advice.

Next week, the year 6 students will take part in their own workshop titled, ‘Becoming a Man; Becoming a Woman’.

Ipad & Internet Safety

Over the past couple of weeks there have been some instances of students accessing age-inappropriate materials at home on their devices, and this information being picked up by our own CyberSafe software at school. I would like to take this opportunity to remind parents of the importance of monitoring your child’s online activity at home, and making adjustments where possible to limit your child’s access to inappropriate or dangerous materials. For information on how to check your child’s internet history you can follow this useful link here. You can also make some very simple and easy adjustments to your child’s iPad to limit their access to different types of innappropriate materials including web content, apps and games by clicking this link . If you have any questions about our IT safety systems or other ways you can protect your children, please feel free to reach out to myself, or the IT Support team here at the school.

SOCKTOBER –Catholic Mission

October marks World Mission Month, a celebration of the global work of the Church and the dedication of missionaries as they reach out and support children and communities in need around the world.

Socktober for Mission Month encourages students across Australia to kick goals on and off the pitch to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children in Thailand and around the world.

Throughout next week students will be involved in several activities to raise awareness of the work of Catholic Mission and on Friday 29 October all students are encouraged to show their support by wearing their brightest, loudest and craziest socks and donating a gold coin. All funds raised will be contributed to Catholic Mission.

More information about Socktober will be shared through our social media channels.

Thursday morning Community Mass

All students and families are invited to attend our Thursday morning Community Mass in the Champagnat Chapel. Mass commences at 8.10am. Each week, a year group from primary and a Guild from the secondary, host the celebration for our College.  e way of attending the mass, however it would be great to see families come together particularly in these uncertain times.

St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal

Term 4 is our annual Christmas Appeal fundraiser. Every year, Newman College, partners with Floreat and Doubleview St Vincent de Paul groups to create hampers for families in our area who without support, will not be able to celebrate Christmas.

Our commitment to this appeal, brings Christian joy and hope to families.

More information about this appeal will be shared in the coming weeks.

Across PK-12, students will be asked to bring in a particular item to assist in creating the hampers.

Last year we were able to create more than 120 hampers for families within Doubleview and Floreat, I know this is something we will be able to do again.

St John Henry Newman

October 9 is the Feast Day of St John Henry Newman. As the name chosen for our College it is an important day to celebrate our PK-12 community. Our students from Kindy to Year 11 gathered to celebrate the Eucharist with Fr Israel. St John Henry Newman challenged his contemporaries to be open to change and it is only through change that we can be perfect and know truth.

Marist Connect Night

On Tuesday afternoon, our Year 11 and some Year 12 students, gathered with students from St Joseph’s Northam and Bunbury Catholic College to reflect on belonging to a Marist community.

The students look at Marcellin Champagnat and his formation from a shy and timid young boy into a bright, confident, and out going young man. Students discussed how the joyful experiences in our life, often provide an opportunity for us to grow and better understand the person God is calling us to be. Thank you to Marist Youth Minister, Liam Street for his preparation of this event and Charlotte Eaden, alumni who has returned to work with this students.

We look forward to growing our partnership with Bunbury and Northam in 2022.

Ministers of Communion Commission

Thursday Week 1, students were recently commissioned by Monsignor Kevin Long, to become Ministers of Communion. This role is an important calling to serve the Newman College community and also their local parish. Congratulations to our students and families for undertaking this important role in the life of the Church and our College.

Newman News Term 4 Week 2: From the Leader of Early Childhood

A warm welcome back to Term 4. I hope students and their families managed to find some moments of rest and recuperation over the holiday period. I know from my own family camping experience that the weather was a bit hit and miss, however, it is always nice to enjoy some quality family time together after a busy term of work. A break from making school lunches, is also always gratefully received.

St John Henry Newman – Buddy Day

Last week we celebrated St John Henry Newman’s Feast Day, with a whole of College mass in the Gymnasium. Our early childhood students were so reverent and participated in the celebration beautifully.

The remainder of the day was celebrated with a STEM Festival in Buddy classes. St John Henry Newman is well recognised as a scholar and the STEM linked activities seemed a fitting way to pay tribute to our school’s namesake. Students worked in small groups to create a square foot garden prototype, linked to the 2021 Science Week theme “Food – Different by Design”. The children were very creative thinkers and displayed problem solving and collaborative skills as they worked together to create their design.

Telethon Speech and Hearing – Loud Shirt Day Ambassador

Today, Friday 22 October is Telethon Speech and Hearing’s Loud Shirt Day. Loud Shirt Day is an initiative to raise funds and awareness about hearing loss in children. This year, Newman College Year 2 student, Emily Siew was selected as the Ambassador for Loud Shirt Day and asked to present her Power of Speech presentation to Premier Mark McGowan.

I was fortunate enough to be able to attend and hear Emily deliver her speech on her ‘Dream Home’ to a collection of Ministers, Telethon Speech and Hearing staff and the Premier. Emily’s dream home comes complete with a cash machine, spa, voice recognition software, turquoise glitter and a robot that does your homework. It certainly sounds like a dream home to me!! Emily is to be commended on the mature, eloquent and engaging way that she represented all students with a hearing loss. We are certainly very proud of her!

Emily and her Mum will be selling cupcakes before school on Friday 29 October, in conjunction with our Fitness Friday activities. All monies raised from the sale of these cupcakes, will be donated to Telethon Speech and Hearing Centre’s Loud Shirt Day fundraiser.

Class Allocations 2022

In Term 4, teachers will begin looking at class groupings for 2022. Many factors are considered when selecting class placements for students and each child’s best interests are the main priority when these decisions are made. Class placements are made in consultation with all year level teachers and significant time and consideration is given to this task. Class placement is made with due consideration of gender, pastoral needs, social and emotional needs, special learning needs, and relationships.

If you believe that your child has needs that require consideration, please arrange a meeting to discuss this with their classroom teacher early in Term 4 or contact me via email at lisa.mcclue@newman.wa.edu.au. Parents should be aware that requesting a certain teacher is not a consideration in the class allocation process.

Class allocations will be shared with families towards the end of term 4.  I thank you for your understanding and support.

Kindergarten 2022

Kindergarten 2022 Orientation is scheduled for Monday 15 November from 9.00am.

Thank you to all families who communicated their preference for number of kindergarten attendance days.

These have now been finalised, and letters have been sent to families confirming kindergarten days of attendance.

Universal Design for Learning

This week our PK – 12 staff came together to learn more about the principles of Universal Design for Learning.  Associate Professor Dianne Chambers led us through the professional learning. Dianne is an expert in this space, she is an author and a lecturer at Notre Dame and works with international organisations, such as UNESCO, to inform best practice teaching and learning for catering to diverse needs. Dianne has recently conducted an audit of our Learning Support and Education Support structure and provisions. One of the recommendations of her report was that the College look at adopting UDL as an approach to teaching and learning. UDL caters well to those with learning difficulties, and what is helpful for children with learning difficulties, is helpful for all students. We will be releasing a summary of Dianne’s report in a subsequent newsletter.

Code of Conduct

The Keeping Safe Child Protection curriculum is a program that spans from 3 years up to Year 12.  Our College delivers this curriculum during classroom teaching, and through the Wellbeing Programs and Health curriculum.

As a Catholic community we are committed to educating the whole person. In order to do this, we need to ensure a safe, supportive and engaging environment. The basis for this environment is that all in the community model what healthy, respectful relationships look like. The Code of Conduct is the definitive guide to the behaviours we want to model to, and expect from, our children and young people. We want to create a culture that assists our children and young people on their learning journey. We can only achieve such a culture in partnership with all who participate in our community. The Keeping Safe Child Protection curriculum is a program that spans from 3 years up to Year 12.  Our College delivers this curriculum during classroom teaching, and through the Wellbeing Programs and Health curriculum.

A reminder to all families that the Code of Conduct can be accessed via the College website. The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers.

Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with a member of the Senior Leadership Team. As always, if students ever need support, they are encouraged to contact their Leader of Wellbeing, a College psychologist, Counsellor or classroom teacher.

The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensure confidentiality and accountability and supports professional boundaries. Events held during school hours, and those College associated events outside of school hours are also supported by the Code of Conduct. Additionally, postings on social media platforms that identify the College or College events are bound by the Code of Conduct. We thank you in advance for your understanding and look forward to a positive partnership that supports our students, your children.
