Term 4 Week 3: From the Head of Primary

As we welcome our families back from a well-deserved holiday break, I have been amazed at the positive attitude our students have shown already this term. There is a buzz around both the Marian and Lavalla Campuses. The end of the year is in sight and the adventures of 2019 are just around the corner. In Week 2 we celebrated the gifts, talents and achievements of the Year 12 cohort at their Graduation, with many starting their schooling at Newman College in the sandpit at Marian Campus. It is remarkable that our College offers learning opportunities for students ranging from 3 – 18 years of age. The foundations that are developed through our Early Childhood program are strategically built upon each year, so those individuals graduating in Year 12 have real opportunities for their future. I would like to thank the hard work and dedication of our Primary staff for their contribution to the graduating Class of 2018.

Marcellin Award

Congratulations to the following students who have recently received a Marcellin Award in Weeks 1 and 2:

Jake Chivers, Year 2 Green – For listening during disagreements and giving others the benefit of the doubt, and believing them.

Ellie Crispin, Year 1 Red – For caring for a Year 2 student when they were injured, with love and compassion.

The Marcellin Award is presented to children who show, in their everyday actions and words, the spirit of the character of St Marcellin Champagnat. The Marcellin Award at Marian Campus is drawn from submitted nominations each Wednesday morning at Prayer Assembly. At Lavalla Campus, the Marcellin Award is presented at campus assemblies to one student selected by the Leadership Team from submitted nominations.

Telethon Speech & Hearing Crazy Sock Day – Get LOUD! – Friday 2 November

Telethon Speech & Hearing (TSH) is a charitable organisation that helps children with hearing or speech and language impairments, learn how to communicate, socialise and learn. They support school aged children in mainstream schools and have been working collaboratively with staff at Newman College for over 25 years. We will be holding an awareness raising event called Get LOUD! It is a campaign to help support Western Australian kids to hear and speak. Last year Newman College invited staff and students to wear their brightest and loudest socks to school. This year, the event will be held on Friday 2 November and all students and staff are encouraged to wear colourful socks on the day. This simple act of helping to raise awareness for Get LOUD! will make a real and significant difference to the children and families who attend Telethon Speech & Hearing and our school.

Parking at Marian

Parents are reminded that when parking in the streets surrounding the Marian Campus they must abide by the restrictions outlined on the gazetted signs. Parking restrictions are in place to ensure access and safety for parents during critically busy periods. As we are a part of the wider community, it is critical that all parents abide by the College Code of Conduct when interacting with members of the public and the Town of Cambridge. I appreciate all who are kind and courteous to our neighbours at drop off and pick up time. If you have any concerns regarding this please contact the College.

Running Club Finished for 2018

Please be aware that Running Club has finished for the year. This wonderful initiative has boosted fitness and camaraderie, while challenging our students during the athletic season. It was great to see so many participating. I hope that students make the most of opportunity in 2019.

Wellbeing Program

This term we continue to focus on gratitude to support the wellbeing of our students and to develop resilience. I would like to start the term by highlighting my gratitude to all of our families who positively support our students and our College.
