Year 11 General Outdoor Education Mountain Bike Camp

On Monday 10 September, the Year 11 General OE class set off on a Mountain Bike Camp that took us along the Munda Biddi trail. We started at Lake Brockman approximately 2 hours south and followed the Munda Biddi trail until we reached Dwellingup. The first day was tough, we rode 70 kilometres across all different types of terrain. It rained the majority of the day, at times it was torrential, we got soaked and it was really cold, but that didn’t stop us as we managed to find a way through and make it to the end. The rain, cold and mud was a great challenge, but we all stayed positive and that helped us overcome how difficult the day was.

Once we got back we set up our tents and then hit the showers! This was the highlight of the camp because everyone just about had hyperthermia at this point. After the shower it was time to start making dinner on the trangia’s. Some people cooked quickly, while others took a while and some people’s meals looked better than others. Not long after dinner we all went to bed to recharge for the next day.

We woke at 6.30am to ensure we leave the campsite at 8.00am. We all got up slowly, our bodies stiff and sore. We packed up the tents and loaded everything back on the bus. The first couple of kilometres were a struggle as our bodies were trying to warm up after yesterday’s efforts. The day however felt a lot shorter and easier than the first. Towards the end of the ride there was a massive downhill where we reached speeds of 70km/hr. This was another highlight of the camp. In the end we rode 45 kilometres and met Mr Van who picked us up in the bus and took us home.

Overall the camp was tough and challenging, however I thought it benefited everyone as we all worked together to get through these challenging times.

Term 3 Week 10: From the Dean of Wellbeing

Importance of celebrating student achievements both inside and outside the classroom.

On the weekend, the Marist Year 12 football team won their Grand Final, Year 12 student, Bec Viney won the A Grade Amateur Women’s Best and Fairest and is the youngest female to win the award, and this year we had a record number of entries in the Catholic Arts Festival.

Acknowledging student achievements is important for the wellbeing of students and serves to inspire others to strive for excellence. Belonging to groups within school, or beyond the College community helps to support young people to engage in activities with others and commit to an interest that gives them a sense of purpose.

Celebrating student achievements, contributions and efforts encourages students to grow and be more engaged.

At Newman College, ‘celebration’ is the public recognition of our individual and collective success. We celebrate by honoring the accomplishments, achievements and contributions of all members of the College community, encouraging personal growth and discovery. The close of every term brings many moments of success and Term 3 is no exception. Our students in the Arts celebrated their gifts through performance at the following events:

  • The Catholic Arts Festival

  • The Jazz Lounge

Students at the Marian Campus have celebrated their learning by seeing their ideas come to life in the IDEAS Lab.

Students from Lavalla Campus have celebrated each other by showing gratitude and kindness. This week, we celebrated the Graduating Class of 2018. I sincerely thank each student for their contribution to the College community and wish them well as they explore their choices as they move beyond life at Newman College.

As teachers, we strive to foster celebration by committing to:

Code of Conduct

A reminder to all families that the Code of Conduct can be accessed via the College website. The Code is mandated by Catholic Education Western Australia and the application of the code extends to all staff, students, parents, guardians, caregivers and volunteers; and to all forums including social media and email forms of communication. The Code seeks to value the dignity of every person, foster positive relationships, ensure confidentiality and accountability and support professional boundaries. Events held during school hours AND outside of school hours that are associated with the College are also supported by the Code. Any perceived breaches of the Code can be discussed with any member of the Senior Leadership Team.

All families are reminded that if they have a concern about the education or wellbeing of their child, they should contact the College directly. We are always willing to support families, but school matters must be managed by the College. It is not appropriate to contact other families about concerns you have about their child. Please direct these matters to the classroom teacher, Leaders of Wellbeing or any member of the Senior Leadership Team.

The College recognises the convenience of year group Facebook pages that are moderated by parents. This is an excellent platform for sharing information involving College events and requirements. It is not appropriate to use social media platforms to seek clarity on teaching and learning or to debate College policies. Please refer these matters to your child’s classroom or PCG Teachers, or a member of the Senior Leadership Team.

We thank you in advance for your understanding and support of how we strive to partner positively with each other.

Term 3 Week 10: From the Head of Primary

As we work through the last week I can safely say our students have packed a huge amount into the term. Our students have been again given the opportunity to develop their gifts and talents in a range of different areas. Our focus is always on the faith, learning and wellbeing of our students and the progress in all areas has been significant. Our students have also been able to celebrate on the sports field, the athletics track, dance floor, behind the podium and on the stage. We are blessed to be able to let their light shine in so many ways. I would like to thank everyone for their support this term and I wish you all a safe a restful holiday.

Years 7–12 Sacramental Program

In Term 4, the College will be sharing with families details regarding a new opportunity that has been extended by the Archdiocese of Perth to Secondary Schools. The opportunity is to develop age-appropriate preparation programs that support secondary-aged students who may have missed the chance to prepare and receive the sacraments in Primary School. This model is a first for Secondary Schools, and will deliver an opportunity for the College to provide a school-based preparation program that connects students to local Parishes, to then receive the Sacraments. Here at Newman College, we have had a number of families express the desire for their daughters and sons to prepare to receive the Sacraments in Secondary School. In this Year of Youth, Bishop Donald Sproxton, Auxiliary Bishop Archdiocese of Perth has extended this opportunity to all secondary students in our Archdiocese on behalf of Archbishop Timothy Costelloe SDB.

I invite you to contact me if you would like to discuss this further, or to express an interest in advance of the details of this program being shared with our College community in Term 4. Please email daniel.lynch@newman.wa.edu.au

Year 10 2019 Peer Mentors

Last Thursday, the Year 10 2019 Peer Mentors were commissioned during a special Communion Service.
The Peer Mentors will be working with the Year 7 2019 students. They will help the students settle into our College by getting to know them, holding fun activities, showing them around the College and being a student mentor for them by answering any questions they may have.
On Monday 8 October, the Peer Mentors will attend the Orientation Day for Year 7 2019 students, helping them to adjust to their new surroundings. We congratulate the Peer Mentors for their service to the College.

Remar Red Leadership Camp

On Thursday 11 October, 21 Year 10 Remar Red Rowers will be attending the Red Leadership Camp on Phillip Island, Melbourne. The camp provides an opportunity for Rowers to meet others from across state borders, further building the sense of a wider Remar community. It aims to strengthen the Rower’s understanding of the Christian life, built around the four spokes – prayer, ministry and service, community and faith development. Rowers are challenged to reflect on their personal call to be a Christian leader by “Sailing away from mediocrity” with ‘dedication and sacrifice’.

Australia Catholic Bishops’ Social Justice Statement Perth Launch

The 2018/2019 Social Justice statement was launched by Auxiliary Bishop Don Sproxton on Thursday 20 September at an event organised by the Justice, Ecology and Development Office (JEDO) of the Archdiocese of Perth. The Statement is titled A Place to Call Home: Making a home for everyone in our land; and it confronts the growing challenge of homelessness and housing insecurity in Australia. The launch commenced with a Welcome to Country by local Aboriginal elder Aunty Marie Taylor from the Whadjuk Noongar people and included a panel discussion from Debra Zanella (Ruah CEO) and Deacon Greg Lowe (WA Catholic Migrant & Refugee Office Director), as well as a friend of JEDO with lived experience of homelessness. If you would like to know more about the social justice statement for 2018-2019 a summary can be found here and the full statement can be found here.

Sacramental Programs

When your child has received the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Communion or Confirmation, please send a copy of their Certificate from their Parish to Newman College Registrar, Flora Hughes Flora.Hughes@newman.wa.edu.au. College records can then be updated and a card of congratulations can be presented to your child at Assembly.

24:7 Floreat Youth Group

Thank you from all of us at 24:7 Floreat to those amazing people who came down to our Quiz Night last Sunday night! It was by far our biggest night ever with 57 people gathered. Next week we’re having a more relaxed but equally entertaining night as we continue to celebrate the end the term (and our superhero program) with a superhero movie night!! Looking forward to a great night of movie watching with you all next week!

We meet each Sunday night (6.00pm – 8.00pm) in the Parish Centre for all young people in Years 6-12. Call Angela 0455 960 174 or Sebastian 0403 230 395 for more information.
